Hatton HAS to beat great fighters at their natural weight to be P4P #1. Beating a guy moving up a few divisions doesn't cement your greatness, just as Mayweather's win over Hatton wasn't as significant as one over Cotto/Margarito/Mosley. There are no great 140 fighters, so he'd have to move up to WW and beat the top dog there or beat BOTH Pac and JMM to gain any type of consideration.

p4p is a mythical list made up of accomplishments, perceived skill, and hypotheticals. You dont supplant the number one guy by beating him.

Not unless your ranked close to the top. There isn't even a hint of Ricky's shadow in the top 10.

Someone should educate the Hattons that it's not a lineal accolade.

Since Ricky Hatton is a natural Jr Welter, why would he have to move up & beat Cotto to be considered the P4P #1 in the world? Miguel Cotto got knocked off on his way to the thrown by Antonio Margarito, Sugar Shane Mosley is #1 at 147 from one stand point right? He's just not considered the Lineal champ but beat the man that beat the man. I figured he would have to beat some top ranked fighters like Pacquiao&Marquez being that them two right now are the best in the world.

How did Manny Pacquiao get the title of P4P best? David Diaz/Oscar De La Hoya? Oscar wasn't even ranked & had no title when Manny fought him right? Isn't Marquez wins apart of Manny's boasts of being P4P #1? Just asking because not sure how it works. I guess Ricky would have to collect some belts. Can't wait to see Pacquiao/Hatton in May though.

I'm getting sick of this. Hatton doesn't get to be P4P #1 by beating Pacquiao. I wish he'd shut up about it.
co-sign .......you said it all, nothing more to say about the Hattons and their misconscrued understanding of how the sport of boxing determines its top p4p fighter or fighters.

Not that it's all about making jumps up in weight, but it does help.

It's just not gonna work out like that. Hatton can't simply beat Pacquiao to be suddenly considered #1. He needs to do more. He lost to Floyd, then beat Lazcano and Malignaggi, and now he fights Pacquiao. If he beats him, it's still not enough. If he moved up to Welterweight and beat Cotto or Mosley maybe he'd stand a better chance, but really, who would think Hatton could win those fights? My money would be on Cotto or Shane.

Studying how Pacquiao rose to the top of the pile you'll see he's worthy of being universally recognized as #1. This will be Pac's 5th division: 106 to 147 (not 6th division because the first Barrera fight wasn't a title fight). He worked his way up gradually, beating some of the best along the way, then recently demolished a solid (if unspectacular) lightweight in David Diaz, then a future HOF'er in Oscar. Imagine Hatton moving up 41lbs from where he started? That'd be like Ricky fighting at 188 -- 13 pounds above light heavy! LOL.

It's Pac's overall accomplishments that have gotten him to the top. Hatton hasn't achieved nearly as much.

It actually is a mythical list, but it is one that most can agree on.
