He was getting the best of Maskaev, who was three years older and more fully matured, but he was injured and his trainer stopped it. A fight like that in the amateurs, not even in a major tournament, doesn't mean very much.

Maskaev, who turns age 40 on Monday, looked old and slow in his fights with Peter and Hawkins. He won't get past the third round against Vitali - Oleg's just too easy to hit now.

Haye would be a more interesting opponent for Vitali, as would Dimitrenko, Chagaev, Valuev, or perhaps Ruiz or Arreola.

Get real, Joe. Toney struggled in the first fight against Peter and was outclassed in the rematch. Peter was thrashed by Vitali.

Whats vitali crying about? He should remember his no.1 ranking was bull****. He retired and came back as the top contender because of the WBC's ridiculous "Champion in Hiding" rule. You lay with dogs you wake up with fleas.

No boxing fan is bothered about seeing Vitali beat up Maskaev (except you, it seems). Most boxing fans would like to see him fight Haye or Arreola. Forcing someone to fight two mandatories in four months is pretty well unprecedented. Vitali beat up Peter with ease so he justified his top contender status whether you agree with him being given it or not. Maskaev wouldn't even give him a competitive round, never mind a competitive fight.

Niether brother should fight Haye because he doesnt deserve a title shot, let him earn it first, the way Holyfield did. Holy was 6-0-6 as a heavy before he got his shot. Point is Haye would not be able to earn a shot before being knocked out.

Michael Spinks was 0-0-0 at heavyweight when he got his shot with Larry Holmes. So was Bob Foster when he got his shot with Joe Frazier. Pacquiao is 0-0-0 at Jnr. Welterweight- do you think he should have to fight 6 contenders before he gets a shot at Hatton? It's hardly unprecedented for an undisputed champion moving up in weight to get a title shot immediately!

The way I remember it, Maskaev wanted to fight Vitali, who had made some comments suggesting he might be up to a comeback. That of course was the bigger money fight.

Peter had won two consecutive eliminators against James Toney so he was the rightful challenger and Dennis Rappaport, Maskaev's trainer, kept the defense in limbo by filing countless lawsuits. When Klitschko was out of the picture and Maskaev was forced to fight Peter, what happened, happened.
