The Problem with Boxing: fighter gets blackballed for impressive KO

Cedric Boswell says since scoring an impressive KO against Roman Greenberg in his last fight, nobody wants to fight him.

From the website that talks about boxing:

    February 24, 2009
    EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CEDRIC BOSWELL
    By G. Leon

    Free Agent Bos, Wants Arreola

RB: So what is the latest?

Cedric Boswell: There is nothing new. I am trying to make something new. It seems like since my last fight I am being blackballed or something. I don't know what is going on. We got to make something happen. I'm calling Arreola out again. He is fighting on Aprill 11th on HBO and he doesn't have an opponent yet. I feel as though we both have knocked out some of the top heavyweights so we need to get an HBO clash going on.

RB: What is your managerial status?

CB: I am a free agent. I don't have a manager or a promoter. That should make the fight even easier to make.

RB: So if Chris Arreola reads this you will be ready and willing to fight him on the Wright vs Williams undercard?

CB: I would love to fight him. We are both ranked in the IBF. That would be right on the map for us to fight one another. We can fight for my IBF North American title.

RB: That fight would give the winner a great shot at another big fight.

CB: Yeah. They are always saying that Arreola is the best American heavyweight. Thats what they think but I say they should do a clash of the top 10 American heavyweights and let the winner fight the Klitschkos. Lets do a box off and let the winner represent America. I don't think Arreola is the top American heavyweight by far.

RB: So you would like a tournament similar to Golden Boy's lightweight tournament coming up on April 4th?

CB: Yeah a box off. That way you get the best American to represent America to go and fight the Europeans. They have a revolving door of American heavyweights. We have Rahman, James Toney guys like that repeatedly fighting the top fighters. Everybody is tired of seeing them. Lets get some fresh blood up in there. A lot of the top lightweights have a promotional contract but the ones that don't have one, don't let them be stuck at the bottom. Let them get a chance to fight the top fighters.

RB: So are you going to manage yourself or are you looking for a manager?

CB: Whatever comes first. If I can get a title shot or a shot at one of the top 5 I will go that way by myself. If there are any managers or promoters who can take me where I need to be I will gladly sign with them.

RB: Would you want the Sam Peter vs Eddie Chambers winner if you can't get Arreola?

CB: I would love to fight the winner. Anybody they got out their in the top 10 I would love to fight. These guys keep talking about they want to fight the top fighters and thats what I want to do too. I feel like I have proven myself and proven to everybody that I can still fight. I knocked everybody out the last couple years. I am right here and I am a free agent. I don't know why I am being blackballed in the game right now. It is easy to make the fight happen. I will fight anybody out there. Anybody in the top 10. I don't want anyone who isn't in the top 10. I don't want to fight them. I want to fight the top 10.

Does he even know how boxing works?

No promoter = impossible to get fights unless your top of a division.

Knew it was only a matter of time before Greenberg faced a non corpse and got starched. Boswell will be 40 in a few months, he can't afford to waste any more time.

Boswell needs to forget about the American hw boxing scene, get a passport and high tail it over to Germany- that's where all the hw action is these days.

I wasnt under the impression that Boswell was a hot ticket before he beat Greenburg in the first place...

in any case, the only reason that Boswell got the chance to fight Greenburg in the first place is because they were trying to use him as a stepping stone. unless Ive mixed him up with someone else, Boswell is a guy close to 40 who was pretty hyped up early in his career, and was the original opponent for Vitali when Vitali got the chance to fight Lennox Lewis.

no offense meant to Greenburg, he seemed like a nice guy, but he had it coming. I had seen a few of his previous fights, and he had some major flaws that were already showing up against lower level journeymen. a win over him aint that huge.

and I do feel bad for Boswell not being able to get big fights, but a lot of fighters dont get big fights when they might deserve them. all you can do is keep fighting the best you can until you finally get a mandatory shot or start to get noticed by the boxing community.

if he ever wants a high paying fight he needs to at least get a half decent prompter. He really mustn't no anything about boxing.

Another heavyweight who can't get a fight is Friday Ahunyana.

Why doesn't anyone want to fight him? Because, like Cedric Boswell, he exposed a phony - an undefeated heavyweight named Alonzo Butler. Now he can't find work as a gatekeeper.

The main problem in the sport of boxing is contenders and up-and-comers being protected from opponents who have a pulse.

                    I agree.

Some of the promoters in Europe want real tests for their up-and-comers. I think the Klitschkos K-2 Promotions would put him in against Ustinov, and if Ahmed Oner put Danny Williams in against Konstantine Airich, I'm sure he would have Cedric Boswell to fight one of his heavyweights.
