Sam, anyone who thinks Calzaghe's split decision over Popkins is better than...say, Jones over Toney is an idiot.

He is entitled to his opinion. Even if I disagree, I wouldn't call him an idiot.

Myself, I like to keep life simple:

Do I like Joe Calzaghe? Yes. I think he was an excellent and different kind of fighter who's resume doesn't quite tell the whole story of how good he actually was, unfortunately. I still like him though. I have been entertained over the years, and I enjoyed watching his career throughout the ups and downs. That's really all there is to it. I can see he makes people's blood boil here, and frankly, I find it quite amusing.

Winky carried the weight so well he went right back down...not to super middle...to 160. He looked chubby and as bad as he ever looked in that fight. Stop making excuses, brother. It was a good name but unimpressive performance by two very lethargic fighters. And Winky didn't carry the weight well AT ALL.

Second, Hopkins stature prior to facing Calzaghe was as low as it had been for years. Not a very impressive performance against Winky and Taylor pushed him as much as he'd ever been pushed before. Ever.

Speaking of Taylor, funny how you easily forget he "earned" his shot against Taylor by beating a sparring partner and jabbing William Joppy to death for 12 rounds. You know, the same William Joppy Felix Trinidad knocked down three times in five rounds and destroyed? The same Tito who wasn't suited for middle? The same Joppy Hopkins couldn't stop?

Calzaghe barely beating a 43yr old fighter who had lost two of his last three and mediocre in all three is not better than Roy Jones beating a prime, undefeated James Toney either.

You're not weighing out the facts, on paper Jones beating Toney looks better but Toney was dead at the weight. What is it about that you don't understand? Winky obviously isn't a SMW, that's why he didn't stay there. You've already said he gave Hopkins a close fight but are critisizing him for not looking good against Hopkins. Hopkins is very hard to look good against, especially when he was throwing his head about so much and cut Winky. Winky is also a very difficult guy to look good against and I think Hopkins looked good, not great obviously but that's to be expected against a defensively sound fighter like Winky. Considering both these guys are defensive genuises it was a damn good fight, alot better than I'd expected. Obviously Hopkins' stock had gone down around the time he lost to Taylor, that's to be expected. Most people thought he won the rematch and alot think he never lost at all to him, both were very disputed. Taylor was an excellent fighter then too remember. Hopkins redeemed himself by dominating Tarver and getting a good win over Winky Wright.

So like I've said, Calzaghe beating an elite P4P fighter still performing at the highest level is better than anything Hopkins or Jones have done. Hopkins going on to dominate another P4P fighter after proves it even further.

I wouldn't say that. I've found his posts pretty interesting. Throwing insults around like "you're an idiot" doesn't really constitute a worthwhile comeback to the quality posts he's been writing. No offense. Obviously, the guy isn't an idiot, you just disagree with him.

I understood the meaning just fine, but it was an awful comparison for several reasons. Jones has faded in many categories, speed, reflexes foot movement due to age. Toney on the other hand was undefeated at the time and in his physical prime. The weight drain excuse, is just that an excuse. Toney stepped into the ring to fight, if his condition was that bad surly he would of been smart enough to prolong the fight especially when you are fighting a gifted opponent like Jones.

The comparison is also foolish because Jones couldn't of known that Toney was going to be any less of a fighter in the ring that night. Calzaghe on the other hand knew the current state of Roy Jones. Joe even talked about it in his Auto Biography. Toney wasn't just a name, how can a P4P undefeated fighter be just a name?

Wether he was undefeated or not is irrelevant because he was badly weight drained, it's well documented. It's not an excuse, it's a fact. I don't rate that win just like I don't rate Calzaghe's win over a shot Jones. Both had nothing to offer on the night. That was my point.
