Maskaev won by stoppage in the first round when Klitschko's corner threw in the towel, Klitschko said he had an injury and couldn't continue.

J.S: Can you talk about the story regarding you knocking Vitali Klitschko out some years ago?

O.M: Yes, I beat Vitali as an amateur. I didn't knock him out, but I beat him in one round - his trainer threw the towel in because I was hurting him so badly. He [Vitali] doesn't want to talk about it, but he knows it happened. I would love to fight him again, to prove I can beat him.
In an exclusive interview with *********, Maskaev claims that he'll fight whomever the WBC mandates though his preference is a clash against Klitschko. "I've been looking to fight Vitali Klitschko because we have to finish something that started when we were amateurs," Maskaev said of an early '90's amateur bout between the two future champions. "I stopped him in the first round. He's saying that he couldn't continue to fight because he had an injury. But the fact is that his trainer threw the towel in the middle of the ring and stopped the fight in the first round."

oh ok so a grain of salt is to be taken with this info. Thanks. Still I think Maskaev is a decent threat to the HW divison and look forward to seeing him in the future.

I'm not sure about Maskeav, maybe he can work his way into a title shot again, I have trouble seeing him beating the top guys though.

maskaev is actually next in line.the WBC wants the winner of vitali/gomez to fight him next.I'm not sure if this is still the case but that's what I read in December.at this stage I'm pretty sure vitali would beat maskaev but you never know.I never thought maskaev would beat Rahman again & he did.this fight could still Happen thou.I don't think maskaev would beat gomez either now, maybe 3 or 4 yrs ago

I forgot about that, you're right, he's the mandatory for the winner of Klitschko-Gomez.

Maskaev is old and shot, he's very slow now. He's fighting a bum in a few weeks. The winner of Vitali-Gomez will knock him out inside 6 rounds.

Although he was a decent, technically sound fighter he was never an elite heavyweight like the Klitschkos. He did have Hasim Rahman's number though...

Sounds like the perfect opponent for Vitaly next.

                  Revenge!
