  • To clarify the point, then in terms of Ring ratings the following are the only divisions where the US is leading (with heavyweight totally absent of any serious contenders):

Cruiserweight - if you count Adamek as really US... or if Banks beats him
LHW - By default after Calzaghe vacated
    Middleweight
Junior Middleweight - though a Ring champ has yet to be appointed
Welterweight - This is really currently to be decided between Cotto and Shane. Berto is nothing more than a contender IMO

    That's IT.

There have been childish reactions to this thread, lots of finger pointing and accusations, but really all I'm making is a simple statement:

Is the state of US boxing in 2009 the nadir of the US's involvement in the sport?

What the UK is or isn't doing in the sport is WHOLLY IMMATERIAL. Just because I'm a poster from the UK doesn't make that relevant in the slightest. I'm asking a simple question.

    • Well, if boxing wasn't so racial, the future of American boxing would be looked at more optimistically. Someone early on in the thread pointed out they didn't know whether or not to include Mexican-Americans on the list. (I like the "Baby Bull" and "The Ghost" Guerrero, by the way, a couple of young fighters.)

And that's my point. Usually, up until only very recently, when you said "American," the first thing most people thought of was a white person. I've only seen people drop the African-American, Mexican-American, etc. in the last few years (if it's been longer, I should get out more).

Politics aside, the U.S. really is a melting pot. We're made up of every possible nationality. So if the next great American boxer happens to have a Russian, African, Filipino, Cuban, etc. background, but is born and raised solely in American, speaks only English, identifies more with American culture, will he still be considered purely American if he decides to step into the ring wearing the colors of his immigrant parent's flag?

P.S. Never judge people by their boxing fans (like the one who started this thread). You'd think they were all racist "twats" (to borrow British slang).

I'm sure a lot of the anger came from "Fat Yank"

It takes a while to get used to your word choice. You are a wordsmith,I'll give you that.

          I know, I do poke with a stick, I can't help it.

But by that token I knew that 90% of the replies I'd get would be "yo,,, ur sayen dat hattun is a gud fiter, lamo".

It just bothers me sometimes people thinking I don't like Fat Yank fighters... can I help it that the current line up ain't that great?

My favourite fighter is Muhammad Ali. The current equivalent in his old division is either someone heartbreakingly old, a fat roider or an obese Mexican.

            • I'm sure there'll be a time for Fat Yankery in the sport again... and there still is, to an extent. Sugar is just one fight away from being the man in his division, even though I think Moby will get sparked by Ick Bon.

              • You have to remember that there are only a limited number of weight classes Americans are going to compete in anyway. Flyweight and Bantamweight are out because most Americans (including the women) outgrow those weight classes before their balls drop. Featherweight and Lightweight are out because Americans outgrow those in their teens. That leaves only Welter through Heavy and if an American athlete is big enought to qualify for Heavyweight he's probably playing football or basketball and NOT boxing.
