Marquez vs. Diaz - For The Vacant WBO Lightweight Title

The WBO has informed BoxingScene.com that pursuant to the approval of their executive committee and championship committee, the February 28 lightweight bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will have the vacant WBO 135-pound title at stake. The belt became vacant last Friday when Nate Campbell was unable to make weight for his mandatory defense against Ali Funeka. [details]

Makes a hell of a lot more sense than going to the MAB/Khan winner.

What I was hoping would happen. The WBO has more integrity - and Warren and King have less influence - than I feared.

Good decision, and well within the rules. Its just too bad that neither Diaz or Marquez wanted anything to do with that title when it was around Nate's waist.........

Besides the fact Marquez and Campbell were trying to make a fight for November and Marquez wanted to fight Campbell, but why bother? Whatever makes Campbell looks better and the feared fighter.

As for it being for the vacant WBO belt, I guess it's alright, but **** the mandatory ****. They should drop it if they have to fight Barrera or Khan as the mandatory.
