    i think the idea is that you're sticking two guys who have spent their entire lives learning how to inflict damage on their opponent by punching, and only punching. 4 oz. gloves are too small for a sport that only allows punching.

    on the flipside of that, the extra padding means the fighter can potentially absorb more blows to the head. like the hbo crew said during the diaz v. pacquiao fight: sometimes a one punch lights-out knockout can be a merciful thing (that's probably part of the reason why most ring deaths and serious injuries occur at the lighter weights. there are less guys with 1 punch knockout power.)

      if boxers were punching with mma gloves they'd break their hands or do serious serious damage to each other.
