The concept of "at x weight" is very subjective. One could argue he accomplished more and was the greater fighter in the given weight class.
Undisputed is also very subjective. Ring/Linear Champions are real World Champions in their weight class, I would consider that generally undisputed. That said, the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO may dispute that claim.
I am a white kid, and I am strongly against racism. Being a white boxing fan, I enjoy it when another white kid manages to do well, as it doesnt happen as often as in other races.
All that said: Joe Calzaghe, as a fighter over all, does not deserve to be ranked higher or held in higher regard than either Bernard Hopkins or Roy Jones. Rocky Marciano beat Joe Louis, Larry Holmes beat Ali, etc. It does not make them greater fighters, not by a long shot. Both Hopkins and Jones have had far greater and more legendary careers than Calzaghe, and history will agree with me.
Joe Calzaghe is/was an elite fighter, and had an excellent career. His accomplishments will not put him in the same category as many of the other great fighters of his era.Comment

Joe will be spoken of highly for SMW, but that's it. Historians will hammer him for retiring after his last opponent, and even if you omit Dawson (and not fighting him is borderline understandable imo) avoiding Glen Johnson and a Hopkins rematch to settle an abysmal performance (when you've rematched a fighter in your career you knocked out in 1 round) will look really bad. I could see some of his words being used against him as well when it came to fighting/not fighting particular fighters.
That's what comes with the territory of retiring undefeated though. The microscope.
Floyd is going to get the same treatment to a degree if he never fights again, but he does already have ATG cred, so it would only drop him a few spots on a list.Last edited by Haglerwins; 02-09-2009, 06:17 AM.Comment

This is to the guy and others who said a prime Calzaghe beats a prime Hopkins.
Are you serious?
Tellme a fighter a prime Calzaghe has dominated or beaten who was similar like Hopkins?
A prime Trinidad still won't touch a 43 year old Hopkins.
If you honestly believe that, you don't know boxing. Hopkins is a pure boxer. He always was, his strength was to take away yours and turn it into a weakness. So Hopkins would have done that to Calzaghe, point blank. Calzaghe's win was far from impressive, and others had him losing that fight. He didn't come to the states and made a BIG impression, he came out to the guys of the american public and looked like **** doing it. then he beat a past it Jones and called it a career. Over-rated anyone? Yes. I'll always give his credit for being a "king" at SMW. For beating Lacy and Kessler and Eubank. That's it. I don't see how he's considered great or anything close. You guys forget and the TS too, Hopkins was also a undisputed MW champion as well, defended his title 20+ times too. He also fought the BEST at that time countless times. Trinidad, DLH, Taylor [even though he lost]. So to say Calzaghe ****s on Hopkins is you ****ing on yourself as a boxing fan, point blank. Do I need to get started on how Jones ****s on Calzaghe too?Last edited by Mojita; 02-09-2009, 08:03 AM.Comment

Nah, cos floyd moved up from 130 to 154.
I think Castillo was his first fight at 135, thats the top guy in his prime.
Hatton Was p4p and unbeaten.
Corrales was considered serious at 130 and i think he was unbeaten, a few people favored him in that fight, before floyd knocked him silly.
And finally skills wise, mayweather is in another league to calzaghe.Comment
