Unfortunately for Hopkins his chances against Calzaghe were always limited. The only way for Hopkins to beat Calzaghe would be to match his output in some rounds and make it scrappy in others.

Jan 2009 issue of the ring magazine. Here is some of it I typed out a couple weeks ago:

"Asked what the difference was between the hopkins that beat pavlik and the one he trained for the close loss to calzaghe, Roach replied, "I'm not sure. He has a thyroid problem and Mackie Shillstone tried to control it with diet for the Calzaghe fight. I've talked to doctors and that's pretty hard to control with diet. He looked like a whole different person in there with Pavlik, so I was thinking he must have taken care of that problem."

From another article (I don't remember the source, from a boxing website not sure which one it was that I copied this from):
sometime after the match Hopkins' trainer Freddie Roach revealed that Bernard had been suffering from a thyroid condition for the Calzaghe bout, a condition whose chief symptom is extreme fatigue. Conditioning trainer extraordinaire Mackie Shilstone had tried to control it with diet. According to the doctors Roach consulted, that's a pretty tough task.

Come on, don't be biased... I am a big Calzaghe fan and wanted him to beat Hopkins but in all fairness even though I agree that Calzaghe won it was still a close fight to call.
