His defense is obviously fantastic, maybe slightly overrated only in the sense that I always felt bhop was the best defensive fighter in the game, not floyd.

If Floyd's defense was so overrated against those three or four fighters you mentioned he would've lost to them.

And, his true gift was being a smarter fighter than the others he faced. He knew what to do, and how and when to do it.

It's a fair point to say it's overrated to an extent... (you'll find excitable people who overrate anything and often end up eating their words)

            But it is great nevertheless.

I think you're right when you say that it's often so highly praised that his other qualities are overlooked somewhat too

To call his defense a 'myth' is extreme though, it's one of the best defenses I have ever seen anyway..... His ring smarts and technical subtleties are almost unmatched

His speed and reflexes do play a pretty big role, but just as important is his experience which creates his unmatched comfort in the ring. The guy has been in the ring reacting to punches since he was about 5...at this point there really isn't any punch or style he hasn't had to defend against 1000 times or so, and his confidence in his defensive is also tops in the game, this is a huge factor as well because he doesn't allow anyone to rattle him out of his comfort zone where he has been "unbeatable" to this point.

I think it is an injustice to just point to his outstanding quickness or reflexes -his defensive skills, like James Toney, have the potential to be extremely effective even after his natural physical tools begin to decline.

I see what your saying Welt and I agree with you. He was the **** back in the day when he was more offensive in his fighting style. He isn't anywhere near as exciting to watch in his more recent fights. You're right, the really fast guys have been able to tag him. Mosley would have had a really good chance of beating him. With that said, he does have very good defense IMO but I can see a case that it is a bit overrated.

something else that's great about floyd is how he keeps everything together

his physical tools are completely in sync with his abilities
