There is a difference and I think Hatton is one of a kind and he is genuinely greatful to be in the position he is in. That cannot be said for almost all top athletes. If he wins, he has a good claim to being the P4P #1. Moreso than Joe C. and Marquez who are ranked 2 and 3. At least he will have beaten the P4P #1 at the time they held the distinction, unlike the others on the 'Ring' list.
you are the one who does not get it dude... here straight from hatton...

“I want to take that title off him – and I know I can. Once I become the best pound-for-pound fighter, how much higher can I go? Once you have climbed Everest, where do you go next? It is the ultimate. You can’t look past someone like Manny Pacquiao. For God’s sake, he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But if I was fortunate enough to win, which I genuinely believe I can do, I will have achieved my ultimate goal,” Hatton told The Daily Star.
Beating him would really fulfill an ambition of mine. Ever since I started out in boxing I have dreamt of being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I am now the best in my division so to be regarded as the best in the world in all divisions would be fantastic – utterly fantastic.

see? how can you say he doesnt think he will be ranked number one? when tarver pasted jones, did tarver took jones' number one position? thats the point dude...

No but he moved up from 27 to number 3 in the ring rankings and ahead of Roy Jones.

A similar thing would happen again if Hatton won. He would definitely not be moved to #1 on the back of a single victory.

I expect to get this from a 16 post newbie, but ask yourself this. Do you think Hatton knows boxing politics? Or not? Being in the top part of the game now for 5-6 years and fighting on the big stage, I think he knows how the rankings work as well or better than you do. If he were to say "Once I become the best pound-for-pound fighter according to The Ring Magazine's rankings , how much higher can I go?" I would agree with you. But he didn't. Hatton is a down to earth guy and he will believe that he is the P4P best when he beats 'THE MAN'. Simple as that. The rankings and boxing politics will not matter to him and that's the way it should be.

And on the Tarver issue: NO you don't come up from one notable career win and KO the reigning P4P best by a lucky, eyes closed haymaker and expect to be the P4P best. That is far from what Ricky Hatton has done, mind you.

Definitely, but nobody else on that list can claim a win over the P4P best fighter at the time and a 3rd position would not be out of the picture either.

That's how you figure p4p. It's not power at different weight classes. You can run your entire career at one weight class and be p4p. If Hatton KOed Pac in 2 seconds of the first round and sent him to the hospital he would only move up a few notches. Still below Joe, B-hop, JMM....

On point....Plus, I think Ricky saying this kind of helps him in some people minds. Not all but some. I would not put him in the top 3 but, some people that are on the line just might. It's a smart statement for Hatton to make even though some don't agree.
