I have to laugh at the people who say Angulo would have destoryed Mayorga. Would he have lost? Maybe. But you need 3 things to beat Mayorga. HAND SPEED, good tech boxing skills and one punch KO power.
Angulo doest have the full package. I mean Mayorga just went 12 with Mosley and was up on a card going into the 12th. I have never seen Mayorga lose to a slower fighter. But when it comes to Angulo, I guess we will never know now.
Kinda funny tho because this might be the end of Mayorga but he gets the last laugh. Everybody was wanting to see this fight. He gave the middle finger to the disrespectful HBO team and all the punk disrespectful fans who never gave him any credit. He didnt even you you the last satisfaction of him in the ring.

It's funny because I actually like Mayorga a great deal but this news is both disappointing and kinda expected. This was just a fight that didn't sit with me for some reason, something wasn't right about it. I always had my doubts that this fight would go through.

The Rivera fight might have been a joke but it was also a joke that Mayorga missed weight by 8 pounds and wound up fighting a guy named Eric Mitchell instead of contending for an alphabelt against Jose Rivera.
Missing weight and causing a fight to be scrapped shows great disrespect for the sport and your opponent. Rivera sacrificed, put in work and was expecting to fight and make some money. Because of Mayorga, Rivera missed out on that payday. Defend those actions.
Mayorga has fought and won many alphabelt titles. I dont see ANYONE going of their way to give him credit for winning the WBC light middleweight title against long time pro, 44-2-0 Michele Piccirillo. A fight he which Mayorga put him on the canvas 3 times. A fight in which some predicted him to be out boxed. So you putting stock in these alphabelt titles is off.
I think everyone agrees Mayorga is good for the sport. This is professional boxing not charity. You can cry all you want about Rivera but nobody cares. As if that wasnt enough Mayorga did fight on that card, and won.

Shaw... you a class act. I guess that next year when you try to bring either Mayorga or Arce to your shrinking stable you will tell them that they have the heart and cojones to face everyone. After fighting Trinidad, DLH, Mosley, Forrent & Vargas... do you really think that he is scared of your boy! Anyway, go and get a "soft-touch" with your fighter and try to sell it to us as a "big fight".

The reason Mayorga doesn't get much credit for his fight with Piccirrillo is due in large part to the manner in which the fight was set up. It was clear that King was setting him up for a big payday fight since Mayorga hadn't done anything prior to the fight to warrant the title opportunity. They put a handpicked guy in front of him to make Mayorga look good and it worked.
Mayorga brings a lot of excitement to the table but a deal is a deal. If you sign a contract and a guy busts his ass to make weight and holds up his end of the bargain and you jerk off and come in 8 pounds heavy, you disrespect the sport and your opponent. Charity nothing because no one forced Mayorga to sign the contract.
BTW, I've seen the Mayorga-Mitchell fight, it was a dreadful performance.

This is what I like, you are quick to give no credit for beating Michele Piccirillo. Yet some how Rivera would have different.
But you say, Mayorga hadn't done anything prior to the fight to warrant the title opportunity? Before the Trinidad loss( at a weight he didnt belong). Its debatable he hadnt lost in 20+ plus fights, over 6 years. During that run he fought p4p ranked and number 1 welter Forrest twice. One one by knockout and a 12UD. Also knocked out then WBA champ Andrew Lewis.
I find it hard to discredit somebody who won 8 of the 10 rounds.Last edited by Darkstar; 02-03-2009, 07:31 PM.
