I think Cortez is a GREAT judge and Marquez needs to worry about Diaz more than he needs to worry about who is calling this fight. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time and Cortez is no different...but he is usually way more right than he is wrong!!! A loss for Marquez here could be very bad for his career...I am sure that Cortez has NOTHING against Mexican fighters!
      I agree!!!!!!!! Very well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that Cortez has anything against Mexican fighters, that's all nonsense. However, his last few big fights he's reffed have been hard not to frown upon. Ever since he became to much of a third man in the ring in the Hatton-Mayweather fight, his judgement has been less than stellar. Not that I wanted to see Hatton get into a hugfest by any means, but the minute they got close he split them up. Enter Bernard Hopkins-Joe Calzaghe where Hopkins clinched constantly and Cortez does nothing. Then of course there was the Soto incident. Cortez may have once been great, and regardless of who he has/is teaching, he himself is slipping currently and I'm not the only one that see's it. Good post though. I never knew that.

I dont think most of the previous posters meant he wasnt a skilled judge, but the ways he applies those "skills" is what concerns them (and me). You can really ruin a fighters chances if you apply rules according to the book rather than considering the situation first. I dont think Cortez has anything against mexican fighters either though, he was just as strict with Hatton in the Mayweather fight.

Cortez is a great ref and a great dude.. Y'all act like you've never made a mistake. Every ref. has.
Get over it. ESPECIALLY the green teefs who are still bitter over the Mayweather fight.
                    He would have lost anyway.
