Floyd gaining number 1 pound for pound status was bad for boxing.

Floyd undoubtedly deserved his pound for pound status, his ability is unquestionable. However Floyd used his position to turn down other fighters.

My argument is this, if Floyd was not number 1 pound for pound the public simply would not have accepted his unwillingnesss to fight people such as Cotto or Margarito. His reign at the top of the pound for pound list lasted approximately 220 weeks (I may stand corrected here), in this time he only faced one serious welterweight, Zab Judah.

Instead he was allowed to choose fights such as De La Hoya and Hatton when they were clearly no match for him. I still think Floyd would have beaten anyone he faced but all of these opinions remain unproven.

This "best fighter in the world syndrome" is bad for boxing, even the gracious and fight anybody attitude of Manny Pacquiao has been affected by this syndrome, as we saw with the Hatton saga recently.

The pound for pound list certainly has been the catalyst in the creation of many great fights but in my eyes it has cost us some great fights also.

whats bad for boxing is this right here.

ppl compltely over-look the fact that floyd started out as a featherweight.

Then, as he moved up, he owned all the divisions he was in.

Its like saying that roy jones didnt fight wlad klitchko in 2003......

its like ppl want so bad to discredit floyd mayweather, that his past doesnt matter, even though every fght he has, ppl say that he will lose because of some factor. the only thing that blind ppl see is the things he didnt do, over looking the things he actually did do

to be great, one has to be in a situation where almost everyone never gave him a chance.. floyd has yet to have that moment, yet he still runs his mouth saying he is the greatest ever...

fighting marg or cotto could have given him that moment, but he chose to retire without being even challenged.

look at pacman, mosley, and hopkins. they have beaten the odds. that is why these fighters will always be greater than floyd

I am not trying to discredit Mayweather, I think he is the best boxer of our generation, however while at welterweight he avoided the best contenders, Cotto, Margarito, Willliams etc. Because of his pound for pound status he got away with what others wouldn't have.

so you can honestly say that fighting cotto, he wouldnt have been the favorite? margarito? based on what you said, he would've had to fight hopkins to achieve greatness

i agree, but that happends to every top fighter. But i think it more the promoter's fault on this one.

They try to overprice their fighter to the point where he doesnt fight at all lol.

Look at Manny right now, hes a guy who loves to fight. He wants to go in there and battle with everyone, but now hes a the top dog and you have Arum doing his negociations for him. But all you hear is Pacman refuses this and does that, when Manny is probably in the Philippines playing pool not knowing what the hell is going on
