Do you think Defensive Fighters are Exciting?

Certainly his Taylor fight, along with others such as his fights against Vasquez, Vargas, McCart, were up there in Fight of the Year honors. All great, exciting fights.
Anyway, to answer the question: I love a good exciting brawl as much as the next guy, though I draw the line at stuff like Monshipour/Saschiswakooorwhatever or the recent psycho slugfest between Mtagwa and Villa (that kind of thing scares me a little bit. I feel disturbed and sorry for the guys that have just had their brain cells mushed into nothing. Same with some of Gatti's fights. It disturbed me. They're exciting but I just end up feeling sorry and wonder why their trainer didn't teach them some defense. You just know they're going to end up so punch drunk it's awful), but, I think I prefer the fights that have a higher degree of skill involved or shown. That's not to say that I like to watch Spinks run about for twelve rounds because I don't, that's just pointlessly boring, but I love watching a guy with great defensive skills that uses those to actually fight and beat the other guy.
I think all my favourite fights and fighters have great defensive skills and use those to compliment their offense. A classic fight would be Toney vs Jirov. That's easily one of my favourite fights, which is very classic in it's puncher/brawler vs boxer. They do often turn out to be the greatest fights. The old adage of styles make fights is really true. It's not that often you get two strict counter punchers putting on a brilliant display of bruising offense to go along with their counter punching though the recent fight between Marquez and Casamayor was very exciting.
Here is an interesting stat for the folks who dislike the counter punchers. Only one guy in history has landed four hundred or more punches in a championship fight four times. James Toney. That's pretty impressive.Last edited by BennyST; 01-20-2009, 03:11 AM.Comment

Do u agree? Most fans of defensive fighters are satisfied with a fight in which both fighters merely touch eachother for 12 rounds. Sort of like a game of "tag you're it" This is boxing. Not duck duck goose!Comment

I hate it when you people post a question and then have ******ed answers. Of course I'd rather watch a war, but I love a good defensive fighter too. As long as he slips and counters and isn't just running then I don't see how you can be a boxing fan and not appreciate it. It is the hardest style to master.
i agree, i was looking for the answer, yes i like all action but if a technical fighter gets all defensive in order to win it is great!!!!!! eg,,,,, B-HOP!!!!!Comment

Defensive fighters can be exciting if they hit back. It's about striking a perfect balance with their offense and defense. The game is still about hitting without getting hit as much and not "catch me if you can."Comment
