Why doesnt BERTO unify?

Not to disrespect berto because he's very talented but to fight someone like Margarito or cotto would give him a loss...
he's not there YET...he's real close...maybe a year away.
He gets better and better with every fight and always shows some type of improvement of skill.
clottey is a fight i can see him winning right now...
williams maybe...
if he's going to step up i think he should go for clottey first since i think he's the weakest link of the top WW's...Comment

Only historically speaking does Berto have the most respected and legitimate belt. WBC is one of the most revered belts, I think second to the Ring title. Anyway, this thread is kinda of silly. If you just saw Berto's performance, you would know why he does not unify right now. Not saying he did a bad job, he showed heart, but he has much more to learn.
Here are some of the things I saw that Berto can improve on:
1. More leg training, exercises, and techniques - His legs looked very unstable past the 6th round so he should get them better conditioned, and he should practice on moving around the ring more, i.e. ring generalship.
2. Establishing a strong and consistent jab - Berto has a nice jab, but it can have more pop in it, and also it should play a dominating role in his fighting style. He should always be starting out with that strong jab before coming in. Like Juan Diaz has evolved his jab, so can Berto. And with Berto's speed and power, it can become the best jab in the WW division.
3. Staying on the outside and picking his spots for combinations - Berto should not engage so much on the inside in future fights. He needs to stay away from his opponent, stick that jab in their face and make them come to him. If Luis had to move more to catch Berto, not only would Berto have more energy because he would not have taken as much body punishment as he did, but also Luis would be more fatigued, and Berto could have taken Collazo out later in the fight
Berto should get in only to throw 4-5 punch combinations like he does well, then get back on the outside and establish his jab. If that does not work he can continue on the inside for a while then mix it up. He took too much punishment in this fight.
In short, Berto has the attributes and qualities to unify the belts, but he needs much more experience before doing so. I say rematch Collazo after fighting a lesser challange. And if not, maybe he should take on Cintron or Quintana this year.Last edited by LRcie03; 01-18-2009, 06:28 PM.Comment

yes berto struggled and was in trouble at many points of the fight with collazo, but he didnt fake he got punched in the groin like Boring-Hop did against Joe C, nor did he even biotch about the point deduction for holding. yes he was holding but he wasnt holding like ricky hatton does in england or how john ruiz holds for 12 rounds. berto stood toe to toe and even tho he took alot of punishment and got out hustled he did not run or make excuses or biotch?
let me go fight cotto or margarito and if he loses he loses it will make him stronger next time around.
the fight with collazo could have gone either way by one or two rounds.
i wouldnt be pissed if collazo got the decision and wasnt pissed that berto ended up with it. cause he didnt run or biotch or make excuses. yes he held but again he didnt hold like ricky or ruiz.
ya feel me?Comment
