Berto Survives Gut Check, Edges Collazo In A Thriller

By Jake Donovan - With Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley on tap for next weekend, Saturday night’s welterweight bout between Andre Berto and Luis Collazo was regarded going in as an appetizer to the main course.

Fans may still be licking their chops at the thought of next week’s fight, but had plenty to dine on with HBO’s first entry of 2009. Berto and Collazo gave the viewers at home plenty to cheer about, and the fans their money’s worth at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

When all was said and done, it was Berto who emerged victorious, surging ahead in the championship rounds to eke out a razor-thin unanimous decision in his toughest test to date.

A game of pity pat threatened to break out early in the fight. Collazo came through with the first meaningful punch of the fight, a straight left that rocked Berto and drew a rise out of the crowd. Berto wisely clinched to clear his head. The strategy paid off in dividends, as a counter right hand rung Collazo’s bell late in the round. [details]

        Berto was handed a gift

Close fight, yes, but collazo edged him. Ross Greenberg thinnks boxing fans want stars, so he's building up berto. everyone at that resort knows who brings that money. so they handed him a close one.

berto showed he had heart and chin, collazo came with his A game and he had to cuz hes running out of opportunities, but i hope he doesnt quit cuz he earned himself a ****load of fans who never knew him.

even though it was an entertaining fight, i still dont think berto is ready for the monsters(cotto, margarito, clottey)yet. he was getting hit with too many body punches

Great observation...and didn't you just love how Max had to tell the hardcore fans who are going to be the new stars? Network contracts = bullsh#t decisions. This is precisely why if I had to pick only one network, it would be Showtime, hands down.

It could've went either way. The fight depends on how you scored a couple of swing rounds (1 and 6 in particular).

              I had it:
              Collazo - 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10
              Berto - 2, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12.

With the point deduction, it's 114-113 Collazo. But score either 1 or 6 for Berto and it goes the other way.

I had less of a problem with Berto getting the nod, than Bill Clancy insisting that Berto won 9 rounds.

I gave the 6th to Berto, which is the difference in our cards.

                    Disgrace, disgrace, disgrace!

Berto is a good fighter who got beat by a better fighter in Collazo. Collazo is more than a gatekeeper and his skills should be respected by all the elite welterweights. Berto is undeserving of being considered a Champion at this time maybe in 2 years ,but I doubt he can continue to get battered as he did tonight against the likes of Cotto, Margarito, Mosley, Pac-Man etc. HE should relinquish the title and put his name to the test as Mayweather's tune-up. Future gatekeeper ANDRE BERTO.
