"I just couldn't get off tonight"

Is this an indirect compliment or an underhanded insult? Often times you see fighters complaining about not being able to get off when they lose a fight. So how do you view it?

Could they not get off because their opponet was simply too good, and wouldn't allow them to?

Or could they not get off because of reasons A, B, C, or D?

To me it is like a guy giving his women an excuse for not being able to get an erection. "Hunny I just couldnt get off tonight" To me it is a combonation of the two the fighter not having it on that given night and being slugish or slow and his body non responsive and or the other fighter having good movement and countering abilities and making him pay everytime he throws a punch. Thus the fighter has doubts and is slow in pulling the trigger and this doest not allow him to "get off" in a sense.....Lefty

Are you trying to tell me you have problems "getting off" with your woman?

What? Its directed at what you're capable of.

Reflexes come and go, not only that but some days when you awake your reflexes aren't even there. I'd play basketball in highschool and some mornings where we'd have a game I felt like my arms and legs were in cement. Sometimes my legs wouldn't showup, sometimes they would after i get warmed up for a minute, sometimes I wouldn't even be given a chance to warm up. I think Age even plays more of a factor. Otherwise we'd always be able to get our speed and reflexes off.

Stop confusing me, son. I haven't the answer to such a mind boggling question this early in the morning.

Oretty much what I said,. Sometimes it is your own body not responding and others it is the opponent not allowing you to respond....Lefty

More often then not it's because their opponent is that good. You hear this A LOT in boxing. I made a thread about this regarding Hopkins. Pavlik said, "it wasn't me in there", "I couldn't get my shots off," etc. Sounded very similar to Tarver who said almost the exact same thing, "I felt like it wasn't me in the ring" "I had nothing on my shots" even going as far as suggesting he may have been poisoned! The simple reason there is a pattern is the way bhop fights and the way he takes away his opponents best weapon away from them (sometimes very simple things like going to Pavlik's left to avoid his right, and realizing pavlik stalls for a split second before he jabs, etc.). It's usually always because the other fighter simply schools the other guy.

Of course I'm sure there are examples of guys simply having off nights and for whatever reasons just not aren't themselves either mentally, physically or both.
