Yeah, he certainly did gain a lot of recognition after the Lacy fight. Some would say he completely shocked the boxing world. It was a big deal at the time, especially as he was a big underdog, even in his own country. While I don't think it was his defining fight (some do), it was definitely his defining performance. The Eubank and Kessler wins are far better.

Here are my thoughts on the subject from when the fight came around.

No one should mention Lacy as a lackluster opponent considering the hype that surrounded him. Jeff may not be the best fighter but Joe should receive his credit for exposing the media outlets as well as the fighter himself. A one sided beating like that only happens rarely.

There was Steve Collins as well after he'd beaten both Eubank and Benn. Calzaghe was the mandatory for his WBO belt but Collins wasn't interested cause he wanted a major fight with Roy Jones.

Collins openly admitted he didn't want to fight Calzaghe because he didn't think he could win. Collins has said it a couple of times, including recently (I think it was in an interview before the Calzaghe-Jones fight).

Also, the cameras followed Eubank on his way back to the dressing room after his fight with Calzaghe, and Eubank said "Now we know why Steve Collins don't wanna box him. Good fighter." The footage is in the documentary "No Average Joe".

The same belt he defended over twenty times. The rest of your post is incoherent British bias that needs no explaining.
              End thread for the win.

                Great fighters do great things.

Has nothing to do with weight.. has to do with the challenge.. like with Jones moved up to Heavyweight and won (damn).. why cant Calzaghe move up to cruiserweight and fight Haye? OR most recently Pacquaio moved up to fight DLH.

"Just too big"... correction.. Calzaghe is just not that good. Remember Roy Jones moved up to Heavyweight to defeat Ruiz. Calzaghe is not on that level.
He tried to make a name for himself by beating an old Jones but that proved nothing. Calzaghe wont even move up to Cruiserweight and fight Haye. He wont even mention Hayes name.

Dawson would be interesting, I just wonder if enough money's there to interest him. As for Abraham, too much risk too little reward - as has been said Calzaghe doeesn't want to risk his unbeaten streak and I think he'd view Abraham as a risk as he likely does Hopkins. Saying that, for me Calzaghe will either fight Hopkins in Wales, fight Dawson in America, or retire this year.

Out of interest, have those criticising Calzaghe's comments actually read the article at the start of this topic? It's hardly the arrogant tirade I was led to believe if you read the comments ...

seems like Calzaghe said 'sorry' and his views were 'misinterpreted'

                      People don't read here.

If Calzaghe said he was to donate all his money to charity; someone would post within a page about what a slappy **** he is, and how he is ducking Chad Dawson.

Some people are riding the troll train very hard on Calzaghe. He has at least 5 very dedicated troll's on this board.
