  • For Luis Collazo - It's Now or Never

    By T.K. Stewart

You won't find his name on any of boxing's pound-for-pound lists. When the big fights are hashed out and put together by the big promoters in the back rooms at the television networks, his name is rarely mentioned. Many are of the opinion that he beat Ricky Hatton but got robbed of the decision by three blind mice in Boston. Others are of the mind that had he not broken his thumb in the second round against Shane Mosley, that he may very well have pulled off a major upset.

So as he prepares to meet up with World Boxing Council welterweight king Andre Berto on Saturday night at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, there is a certain belief that for Luis Collazo to continue on as a 'going concern' in this business they call boxing - that it's now or never for him.

It's not that Luis Collazo hasn't had the chances to do big things. He did, after all, enjoy a 13-month run as the World Boxing Association welterweight champion before losing the belt to Hatton by a close decision.

After he was floored in the first round by 'The Hitman' he arose from the deck and went tooth and nail with Ricky on a night in Boston that it seemed as though it may have been a good idea to begin building another version of Noah's Ark. [details]

I thought we'd see better of him after the close fight wit Hatton. I gave him a slight chance against SSM, but he got whomped and ain't done much since. He's got a chance wit Berto but I don't favor him.

So do you believe that he did not hurt his thumb in the SSM fight? I've got to admit, I have not followed Collazo, but after watching the Ricky Hatton and SSM fights, it looks like Collazo will have a chance if he is in shape and not injured.

To be honest, it'll be nice to see how Berto handles Collazo. I mean Berto of course looks in shape and is a big welterweight, you know not tall, but bulky. However, I think Berto has much more speed then power, and his high knock out ratio is due to fighting alot of competition that was not on par, and also by shocking his opponents with his punches. With that said, I think Berto is strong, but just not stronger than Collazo.

Though I feel taht Collazo will do better than alot of people expect, I think he will utimately loose to Berto's speed and endurance, bc you know berto is going 12 rounds, and he looks in round 12 like he does in round 1. I don't think there will be a knockout, but possibility a knock down by both fighters, and if it is stopped I think Luis will stop Berto, bc even though he has a lower knock out ratio, he has faced stiffer competition than Berto.

I think Berto is really gonna win this one. He's pretty sharp. Do you really think DiBella would represent a bum? With the exception of Tarver.

Berto has that right hook uppercut. That would shred Collazo. Plus, Colazo didn't look that great against Hatton.

I'm definitely not counting out Collazo, I doubt he's gonna let the chance slip.
