Would We Even Be Talking About Joe Calzaghe?

That would be impressive if Roy wasn't a beat drum. It's worse in a way because he couldn't do anything worse than cut Roy, when Joe fans love to point and prod how inferior Tarver and Johnson are, but one clean clocked Roy and the other nearly killed him in their bouts. Jones showed during the Joe fight he no longer had it. Admitted in his corner he wasn't even fast enough to get to Calzaghe. Tip Tap Cal gets his head split like a coconut prime 4 prime. No way he keeps up with a Jones that can put him down that easy and has more than the speed to match.Comment

Calzaghe laying on the floor might be the ultmate conclusion in a prime for prime fight, but it wouldn't be as simple as that
you're overlooking the facts that Calzaghe's formally very respectable power has almost completely diminished and that his punch resistance is fading as he ages
i feel Calzaghe would be caught cleanly too often to win a fight with RJJ prime4prime but he would give him hell up until the point where he finally hit the canvasComment

Punch resistance fading to the degree he gets put down with not much effort? All this time we heard Kessler was the hardest hitter Joe faced, but he couldn't do what Roy or to a lesser extent what Hopkins did with just as clear paths to the target. Joe adapts, I'll give him that, but what does that adaptation look like if the guy in front of you is faster and hits like a mule? People love to bash Roy for his lack of fundamentals but I see Cal getting by on his agility for defense much like Roy used to. I'd give Roy a better chance to survive Calzaghe's "power" prime 4 prime than the other way around. At least with Roy you can make the argument his chin didn't fall the **** off until his weight fluctuation debacle.Comment

he got caught cold, it happens... the put down was more to do with pushing him over than dazing him and putting him in troubleComment

No... I've heard that argument, and have seen that shot from both angles recorded. He was going down despite the left arm tangle with Hopkins. And I agree, that was more a technical shot from Hop than one with some serious mustard on it (but that is the point - it wasn't even that hard). He still tasted canvas.Comment

the Hopkins KD would have definitely been more worrying for a Calzaghe supporter (although personally i was rooting for the Executioner that time)Comment

Everybody can punch. If they get lucky they might do damage even if they aren't know as big punchers.Comment
