I think you might actually be incapable. To you, anyone who is a Calzaghe fan or defends him is a nuthugger and you twist every thing about Calzaghe to be negative. I'm glad that I'm objective rather than subjective like you.
So Joe was a top level fighter defending a fringe belt in a fringe division and expected a big payday for it? Keep being "objective"- it's illuminating.

The problem with Jones is that he hasn't been the same in a good 5 years, and it has seemed like he has aged in dog years (no disrespect... but you know how Jones looked against Calzaghe).
exaclty...jones was never the same after the 2 tarver fights and the glen johnsin fight. tarver gave him a bit of a beating in the 1st fight and then ko'd his ass in the rematch. glen basically pitched a shut out and knocked roy the **** out...then jones lost 10-2 against tarver in fight 3 and almost got KTFO in round 11....

he beats prince badi, hanshaw and certainly didnt look like the old roy. he didnt even look like the old roy against tito who was way past his peak himself plus inactive.

jones gave a good performance and put joe on his ass at least..but he's just too past his prime. prime for prime, jones would beat joe.

seriously, anyone calling joe a legend after that fight is a dumbass nuthugger. glen johnson and tarver ****ed roy up much much worse.

Whether you value the WBO belt or not (and I don't really), the belt is still recognised as a proper title. Regardless of this, because of his popularity in the UK, Calzaghe was used to pretty good paydays even if he was 'fringe'. Do you seriously expect him to take a pay cut to fight a fighter like Roy Jones Jr? He would have had to, judging by the paydays Jones gave out. It would be great if Boxers were true warriors who would fight anyone for little money, but realistically speaking, boxing is a profession and a profession in which one defeat can seriously hurt your earning potential. There is no way a fighter who considers himself a champion, is earning like a champion and is in another weight class is going to take a pay cut to fight another champion in his backyard.

I don't spin things like you, I tell them how I intepret it from the facts available. I was appaled that Calzaghe chose to fight Jones instead of Pavlik, even if the end result of a Calzaghe vs Pavlik fight would have been similar. For the record I also think Jones would have beaten Calzaghe in his prime. It must be difficult being a fight fan and only being able to think about a fighter you hate.

Your first statement that it is a proper title is incorrect because we are talking about the late 90's early 00's. It was even less legit than it is now.

I guess the super NABO champ should get to fight the P4P champ and expect his own fight conditions and a huge purse. Come on man.

Prime Roy beats Prime Joe in my opinion.

Its a shame Calzaghe did too little too late, and that he didnt have a real trainer.

He's got only himself to blame for it. Shame his delusional fans can't see that it wasn't everyone else ducking him....

                  Look.

Reason why Calzaghe can't draw a big crows is because he is to a big fighter, He is talented, but he is wasted his talent fighting half-empty stadiums.

He had the WBO belt (of all belts), and in the dullest and worst divisio on Boxing, the SMW.

He humiliated himself in many eyes when his "Fear of Flying" was suddenly cured whe Hopkins and RJJ were going to retire.

Fact of the matter is, nobody goes to Wales or the O2 Arena for a big fight. The big fights are in the US. Where the PPV sales are higher.
Which is why Hatton went there.

Let's fact it, going to Wales to fight Calzaghe was the same if not worse than say someone like Hopkins, RJJ going to Romania to face Lucian Bute.
Why? Because RJJ and Hopkins have ALOT MORE options to stay where they are.

This is why i cannot take some fellow British Calzaghe fans seriously, saying "oh, RJJ and Hopkins ducked Calzaghe, they ever came to Wales".

I mean can you imagine Romanian fans saying "RJJ and Hopkins are not coming to Romania to face Lucian Bute, their ducking him, Bute is undefeated etc. etc.".

                  Ridiculous right?

I have no idea what conditions Calzaghe would have expected, but he would certainly have expected his biggest payday to date. Compared to what Jones was earning, it certainly wouldn't have been a huge purse and that would probably have been the only condition Calzaghe would have demanded. Even if the WBO belt was less respected back then, comparing it to the NABO is silly.
