Actually Cotto is making his $3 million guarantee while Margarito is making somewhere between $2-2.5 million against Mosley's $2 million.

I can't imagine Cotto getting that much guaranteed money in a PPV that will probably produce poor numbers.

The Jennings match should be Cotto's last fight in his contract with Top Rank but it does stipulate a minimum of $3 million per fight. He probably signed some sort of extension to do the Margarito rematch.

By comparison Margarito's contract only guarantees him $1.5 million but managed to secure $2 million for the Mosley fight. HBO also kicked in some extra cash above the $2 million to get Margarito to sign after talks fell apart earlier in negotiations. Mosley is making very good money at $2 million considering he only made $1.5 million against Mayorga in a lack lustre showing.

Because it's about marketability. To the casual fan records mean a lot, and Margarito has some losses from early in his career. Cotto had the illustrious stint in the amateurs and was groomed for stardom. It may not be right, but that's just the way it is.

It has nothing to do with cotto losing his last fight and needing an easy fight. The dude is a top notch pro he knows what to do. He's fighing jenkings because jenkings was the WBO mandatory for pwill and since paul-will vacated this is now a great shot for cotto to face jenkins for the wbo belt. That will lead to cotto vs margarito in a WBA, WBO unification bout which will bring in more money. Keep in mind arum promotes both fighters and by putting cotto against jenkins for the wbo just simply shows arum is looking ahead and making the rematch as big as possible.

margarito vs mosley will be a tough competitive fight either way...after the fight 100s of people will complain that the loser was exposed and never that good to begin with...
