Holy Crap it's another MMA thread

I wanted it in NSB because I want to get an honest answer instead of just accusations of being a hater, but it's something brought up in another topic that merits its own thread.

It has been claimed that MMA is the closest you can get in any sport to a real street fight.

Could somebody please tell me why this could be considered a good thing?

I feel no shame in admitting that I find the sport barbaric and refuse to watch it.

Real fighting is pathetic to watch considering it has biting, kicking, poking in the eyes, and pulling hair. If MMA ever wants to be looked at in the same way boxing is as a sport it better not promote like that.

its not even that..its a sport, just like boxing but with fewer rules and you can use more techniques. But in a street fight, anything goes. In a street fight, you can be sucker punched when youre not aware, you can be stabbed, shot, or kicked to death by 4 ppl. You could win by kicking the guy in the face, but the day after he could burn your house down. Street fights are unpredictable, you know when they start, but you dont know where and when and how they end, especially when you dont know your opponent and what hes capable of.

          just how they promote it.

in the old days it was when you saw everyone just going at it. no judges and no time limits.

now it's turned into more of a sport.

          it happens.

brazilian jiu-jitsu also used to be like a streetfight on the ground with guys going mostly for submissions or striking on the ground. now it's turning into more of a sport too with guys just trying to get points for passing guards and takedowns and ****.

But it's being pushed by the fans as "realistic". Aside from the fact that sports are not "realistic", they are simply "real", I don't get how something being just like a street fight is a positive mark for the sport.

Lets put its this way, MMA is not street fighting but it is much closer to a real street fight than boxing. Not much to claim there anybody with have a brain would agree to that.

Could somebody please tell me why this could be considered a good thing?
Because historically humans like watching combat sports. This goes backs thousands of years...nothing new. Why do you watching boxing?

MMA is the sport of fighting, boxing is the sport of punching.

Let me start by saying that im a boxing fan before im an MMA fan, but I purchased last nights UFC card, and felt that i got more **** for my buck than most recent boxing ppv cards.

I really dont see why all the hate for MMA/UFC.

Hang on, people like to watch combat sports. Not real fighting and especially not real streetfighting.

You still haven't actually explained what is good about watching a street fighting.

Note that I'm not commenting on the quality of MMA at all in this thread. It has just come to my attention that a lot of fans of MMA state that they prefer it to boxing because it is "like a real fight" and I wanted to know why that should be considered a positive.

Most "real fights" involve people who don't know how to fight.

MMA is the sport of fighting, boxing is the sport of punching.
Edited to add in the above absurd quote. MMA is the sport of punching, kicking and rolling around on the floor. Gladiatorial contests are the sport of fighting.

Speak for yourself. Ever since a kid, whenever there was a street fight, everyone would run over to catch a glimpse at whats going on. Where im from, people would rather see 2 guys go all out in a no holds bar street brawl, than watching two guys dancing around eachother, flicking jabs and trying to box eachother for 15 minutes. But hey, to each its own.
