but the only reason why boxing is a business and televised sport. If all fighters where mental and defensive, we'd have to travel to gyms to watch some boxing.

fighters like the Marquez bros, Roy Jones, Miguel Cotto, Jermaine Taylor etc have shown that you can balance out strategy with excitement.

The fans, at the end of the day, are the ones who decide whether or not boxing lives, or dies.
no i agree but those same fans leave you for dead when you lose...i guess i meant huggers, bandwagon jumpers

If you mean in terms of fans on a boxing forum, you might be right.

Actually, I think people love to see fighters lose and really see their vulnerability, only to see how well they bounce back. At least I do. This is how, in my opinion, you get to see what a guy is really made of.

When his back is against the wall...and the chips are stacked against him.

How well does he handle that ?

That, to me, is the true measure of a fighter.

At the end of the day you HAVE to excite fans in boxing, If you dont then they dont pay to watch you, Boxers have found different way to excite without actually been offensive in the ring though.

Merry Christmas, but what were you hoping to say with that?

The whole POINT of the thread is that it's rare for a fighter to be both mentally astute in the ring AND crowd pleasing in his style. You can box with a "safety-first" 'tude and secure points wins all the live-****ing-long, but if someone else can earn as many W's (against tougher opposition) in an EXCITING manner, then he gets the superior props over you.

I agree that Roy Jones was exciting and effective.
I guess what makes Manny Pacquiao different is, he's a nice guy.
Roy was a taunting, arrogant, badass mother****er, LOL.

                    h.

True, but I think a lot of that has to do with promoters and managers protecting their fighters.

In regards to what we're talking about, you look at a sport like MMA. Almost every fighter, probably 99% of these guys have taken losses at some point in their careers. You hardly have any established guys in there with '0's

The reason for this is because for the most part, you have the best fighting the best. Which is why, in my opinion, the sport is growing so rapidly.

These guys are out there fighting the best, because frankly, they have no choice.
