    Boxing Dissertation

    Hi guys

I am doing my dissertation on marketing in boxing and how it differs from that of MMA and I am just wondering if you guys could help me out by answering a few quick questions!

    Age

    Name of Club

    Location

    Why did you start boxing?

How long have you been doing it for?

What motivates you to go to training?

Do you do any other combat sports?

    Do you compete?

What is your perception of boxing at amateur level?

What do you think are the main problems with attracting people to boxing?

Do you think newer combat sports such as MMA/UFC are more appealing to people?

Do you think boxing should be made more accessible to youngsters?
How much is it to join your club and what kind of fees do you pay?

Do you think amateur boxing suffers from a bad image due to pro boxing?

If yes, how would you go about changing that image?

Do you think the amateur scoring system helps or hinders the sport?

    Many thanks guys!

Formal boxing training, 2 years. Training in general, entire life.

Merely exisiting motivates me to train hard every single day

Yes. I'm a martial artist. (first and foremost)

    Yes. I compete

Amateur boxing: gaining experience and grooming a fighter for the pros

The average "idiot" doesn't understand or comprehend its depth

Yes. It [MMA] is more appealing because it's easier to understand and brutish

Yes. Boxing is better and safer for youngsters. $60 a month. Freddie Roach charges $50 a month. All access

No, Amateur boxing is still relatively pure with regards to pro-boxing

I think the scoring system helps amateur boxing. It teaches fighters to throw "sets" and how to score points.

    There ya go....enjoy

Used to play hockey, didn't get recruited by colleges, needed something else to be competitive at, chose boxing because it was a 1 on 1 sport and I was a lifelong fan

How long have you been doing it for?
About 2 years actively training 5-6 days a week, but i used to use boxing for off-ice training when I played hockey

What motivates you to go to training?
The other fighters at the gym, self improvement, I don't really do anything else anymore

Do you do any other combat sports?
      No

      Do you compete?
      Yes. 6 amateur fights.

What is your perception of boxing at amateur level?
USA boxing does a great job of preventing mismatches and protecting fighters, but the scoring system is notoriously shoddy. I've been a victim. Also, they could use some improvement when it comes to actually organizing events. Overall it's a positive experience and USA boxing does a good job.

What do you think are the main problems with attracting people to boxing?
Too many fights on PPV or paid networks (HBO, Showtime). Too many champions, yet no clear champion. Money rules over actual rankings (and the fact that you have to pay fees to be ranked). The wrong fights are made for the wrong reasons. Boxing's inability to govern itself turns people away.

Do you think newer combat sports such as MMA/UFC are more appealing to people?
As a whole I don't think you can make that claim. It depends on the individual. MMA is more popular in the United States right now.

Do you think boxing should be made more accessible to youngsters?
It should be more accessible, period. More good fights on cable.

How much is it to join your club and what kind of fees do you pay?
      Free

Do you think amateur boxing suffers from a bad image due to pro boxing?
      No.

If yes, how would you go about changing that image?

Do you think the amateur scoring system helps or hinders the sport?
Hinders. I can tell you first hand it frustrates fighters, and can ultimately turn them away from the sport. Also, fighters are now more likely to develop a style that is well suited for the amateurs, but ultimately doesn't prepare them for the pro ranks (which I always thought was the point of amateur boxing).
