I have always found it strange that Duva had so many black fighters... it is not incorrect to say that a lot of camps of certain fighters are all of the same race as the fighter... IE Williams's camp. They are all black. Nothing wrong with it... those are probably the people he grew up with. It's kind of cool that Duva broke tradition with it.

Anyway, I can only think of 5 fighters I can remember Duva training (although I know there are more):

Holyfield
Junior Jones
Meldrick Taylor
Whitaker
Golota

Anyway, I was curious if anyone knew any reason he was in with a lot of black fighters... was his training style just very good for the slicker technique that goes along with the way a lot of black fighters fight?

Jones, Taylor and Whitaker are three of the slickest/flashiest fighters I have ever seen...

George Benton was really the trainer, Duva added stuff here and there but Benton was the one doing the serious training.

Now that you say that... I think the same was true for Junior Jones when he fought Morales... Tommy Brooks was the head trainer for Jones and Duva was the 2nd.

So... was Duva just an extremely great hired gun 2nd trainer?

Duva was like a cheerleader in the corner, Benton, Brooks and Shields did most of the instructions outside of the ropes, Benton was the best though and Benton was a pretty slick fighter in his day so he taught defense well, Pernell Whitaker's defense is based on Benton's.

Duva was more like a manager.
