    My heart is breaking...

    for Meldrick Taylor.

I am watching Chavez-Taylor I, and as soon as 1 minute left in the 12th round rolled around, I got really sad, knowing how hard he had worked all night, and how masterfully he had fought. He sacrificed the entirity of the future of his career for this fight. And then it all goes to hell because he got stopped.

I am in the camp of people that think that the stoppage was a correct call by Richard Steele, or at least in the group of people that feel that there is nothing wrong with stopping a fight with little time left in the 12th. There may have been Steele jumping the gun on stopping it, but... as far as the rules go, I think it is okay to stop it in the 12th.

Either way, my heart broke for him, because that was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen in the ring by a fighter, and he lost, and because of the heart and toughness of his character, he took so much punishment that it ruined him, and he would never have the opportunity to put on a performance like that, ever again, even if he wanted to.

    Meldrick Taylor... great fighter.

I have alot of respect for Meldrick Taylor.

He was one very talented boxer, was as tough as nails and he showed it against chavez. even though he lost the fight it was a great performance.

his downfall after that is a shame to see.

Taylor was a very good fighter, he deserved to win that fight, I feel pretty bad for him too.

I really also can't decide which was more impressive...

Meldrick Taylor absolutely kicking Chavez's ass for the entirety of the fight (damage wise) or Chavez being so fresh that he could hurt Taylor badly and knock him down and out in the 12th round.

What an incredible bout... a keeper for sure.

I just wish both guys would have been able to come out of it okay and continue their great careers... Only one was able to.

Both guys performances were very good.

          Can't discredit either guy.

I was watching the rematch yesterday. It was only 4 years or so after, but Taylor looked a lot older, and was clearly not the same fighter.

the rematch was awful to watch.

Taylor was way past it by that stage.

Agreed, he did not look the same.

But, he also didn't look way past it. He looked fairly competant in the ring in the rematch. He just looked like he couldn't take the punishment like he did in the first fight.

I say he was way past it. Just watching him you could see he was not the same fighter.

His ability to take punishment was not the same at all.

Taylor was pretty past it by the time the rematch happened, he took a beating from Terry Norris which took even more out of him before the rematch.
