Time To Retire The Anti-Evander Holyfield Agenda

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Sorry folks, but I’m coming up empty on the search for outrage.

While other writers, fans and analysts seem unanimous in their righteous condemnation of Evander Holyfield’s quest for the WBA heavyweight title this weekend in Zurich, I’m having a hard time finding anything other than misguided optimism he might actually pull it off.

And if nothing at all else, I think he at least warrants a chance.

For at least a couple of reasons.

First of all, speaking merely of the fight itself, I’m not so sure it’s the ridiculous mismatch that those so quick to judge have branded it.

For those who haven’t seen him – and in spite of the gaudy 49-1 record and two reigns as champion – Nikolay Valuev ain’t Ivan Drago.

Oh sure, he’s 7 feet tall and, yes, he weighs in somewhere north of 300 pounds, but in terms of actual in-ring prowess he leans far more toward Barnum and Bailey than Ali and Frazier.

And though he’s admittedly won seven of eight fights over the last three years – perhaps leading to his billing as a 9-to-1 betting favorite – the opposition he’s faced is hardly head and shoulders above Holyfield, even at age 46.

Valuev’s decision wins over John Ruiz were at least questionable – and to some, criminal – while TKO defeats of Monte Barrett, Owen Beck and Jameel McCline don’t clearly mandate any more confidence than Evander’s recent beatings of Fres Oquendo, Vinny Maddalone and Lou Savarese. [details]

Whilst I agree that Valuev is a pretty ordinary fighter and it is not a completely horrific mismatch I still do not want to see Evander in the ring. The man is old and punch drunk. Someone should step in and make him end it IMO.

I truly fear for Evanders health,.. how much more pounding can his cranium take before he ends up partially paralyzed and unable to speak clearly at all?? I've scene Valuev hit people on top of the head like a hammer with his thigh sized arms..

All 4 of the major sanctioning bodies mandate THOROUGH physicals before each title match... especially when one combatant is 46. If Holyfied sustains lasting damage, it will be a new occurence that happens on fight night. As for his condition walking into the fight, he has been found medically fit to fight. Now joints, tendons, long muscles... they wont be 100%... but neurological resposiveness, equilibrium, cranial normality, and responsiveness to external stimuli are all in tact... meaning, from the chin up (medically), Holyfield is still 23.

But those tests are just further proof of how little it takes to be cleared to fight.

Honestly, the cruel question is, at what point do we start hoping for Evander to suffer a fatal injury (or worse) in the ring. Because that's the only thing that will keep him away at this point.

On the Ruiz fights - the first fight was a questionable decision, I agree (I had Ruiz winning by at least 2 pts). I thought they got it right in the rematch, though. Just because Ruiz pitched a ***** about it, doesn't make it controversial

I agree, just because Ruiz bitches doesn't make it controversial, but I didn't say controversial... I said questionable. And I think there have been plenty of people not in the Ruiz camp who'd call both decisions "questionable."

As for the other issues... Holyfield's being held prisoner by how good he used to be. There are plenty of 40-year-old ham-and-eggers out there with records of 15-73, and no one raises an eyebrow about their licensing because they were never any good in the first place and there's been no discernable slide in their ability.

Evander, true, isn't near what he used to be. Only a fool would argue that. But he was still good enough last year to go 12 rounds with an unbeaten belt-holder... a guy who'd knocked out plenty of younger fighters. He's probably good enough today to beat at least a good chunk of the guys in the top 50, something 99 percent of the practicing heavies in the world couldn't do.

And if that's the case, who's to say he shouldn't fight?

                    Holyfield

You gotta love the guy. He has the determination that is uncommon these days. When many a fighter would have given up, he is still treading along. All his life he has been proving people wrong. From, He is too small to be a heavyweight, he will never beat the big guys. He can be no other way. His will is what has made him great.
There is a saying: That which makes you great can also destroy you. We can only hope this is not the case for Evander.
