Here are some numbers that may or may not have been posted here before:

Top 10 North American PPV buy rates, 2008

    1. Boxing: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao -1,250,000
    2. UFC: Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture -1,010,000
    3. Wrestling: WrestleMania, Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Paul “Big Show” -670,000
    4. UFC: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch/Lesnar vs. Heath Herring -625,000
    5. UFC: Lesnar vs. Frank Mir -600,000
    6. UFC: Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin -540,000
    7. UFC: St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra -530,000
    8. Boxing: Felix Trinidad vs. Roy Jones Jr. -500,000
    9. UFC: Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans -480,000
    10. UFC: B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk/Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida -475,000

The Lesnar/Couture PPV did 2,000,000+ buys from what I was told.

I'm seeing a trend similar to what has happened in music. Ja Rule would sell millions of records why, not because dudes thought he was ill but because bitches were into his ****. What women like, is what gets spun on the radio, gets played in the clubs, gets sold in record stores, and are generally the more successful artists of our time. Elvis, N'Sync, Eminem, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, James Blunt. Just to name a few, do you think dudes are really where the bulk of the money these artists make comes from?

There are two spots I frequent near where I live for all of my boxing PPVs and UFC PPVS and the UFC crowds triple and quadruple what shows for boxing events. The majority of the crowd aside from the frat boys are women. Sure they aren't people I would consider real fans. They can't name a move made, probably don't know what shooting is, and couldn't tell you what ground and pound is - but they scream their heads off and cheer and lose their minds to these half naked dudes beating each others asses. Point is, the ratio of women to men is easily 2/1 and 3/1 at times.

I'm not saying boxing needs to market itself towards woman to survive, but with UFC becoming increasingly popular at what seems to be an astronomical rate - where will it end for boxing? How long can boxing tread water for?

    Thoughts? Lets discuss.

Want to read the entire thread? I already commented that it's not the appearance of the competitors that I am comparing.

I might be wrong, but I think caucasions are more drawn to UFC because there are more Anglo champions. There aren't a great deal of American White champions. Pavlic was great for boxing until he ran into the legendary Benard '' I aint losing to no white boy'' Hopkins. Then again my theory can be disputed because Blacks do good at boxing, but supports ppv boxing at a much lower rate than White Americans. The only person I can think of recently who markets well in the urban community is Floyd Mayweather. Hopefully boxing will appeal more to the general public in the future. You gotta respect people like Max Kellerman, Teddy Atlas, & Brian Kenny for trying to push boxing on the great sports network (ESPN) & into broader audience. I admire Dana White, but I wish he stop trying to discredit boxing every chance he gets.

**** the UFC! I can't stand watching that ****. Don't care how hot it is right now. I'm a boxing fan for life! Who cares about women fans.(groupies) DLH is the biggest name in boxing and it was proved by the PPV buy rates. People who don't follow boxing can't name many current boxers, but know DLH. Some rooted for him because they didn't know who Pacquiao was.

I ordered that Dream Match PPV fight and all my family and friends rooted for DLH. They knew little of Manny.

Who cares about women fans/groupies as you call them? Businesses looking to survive. The majority of markets are controlled by women. Ever heard of Oprah? She can make or break a business. If Oprah tommorow said, "I absolutely love UFC" I would be willing to bet my house that every PPV would be doing 2,000,000+ buys. The majority of commercials and products made are all marketed towards women. Mind you the UFC doesn't even purposely market itself towards women, but some how it has caught their eye and they are all over it.

All I'm saying is that I don't care. The women that I personally know don't care about the UFC. They like college football instead. The only reason they saw that Dream Match fight was because all the "guys" were watching it.
