The interest is there. The fighters want it. But a unification bout between welterweights Paul Williams and Joshua Clottey is not getting any closer to becoming a reality. One thing is for sure, the fight will not happen on November 29, the scheduled HBO date for Williams. Williams would love to have that fight in November, as would Clottey, but it won't happen. The root of problem is the available funds from HBO [for the November show].

When HBO is unwilling to raise the budget for any particular event, the promoter(s) are more or less forced to find the best possible opponent with whatever amount of money made available in the pot. Unfortunately, the secured opponent is not always someone who the public is willing to watch, but usually the guy who is willing to take a risk for short-money, with the hope of pulling out a televised win that changes the direction of his career.

Vincent Scolpino, manager of Clottey, would tell BoxingScene.com on Tuesday that he's hoping the fight can happen in the early part of 2009. Top Rank's Bob Arum recently made it known that he wants to focus on putting together a unification fight between Clottey and Williams for next year. Williams' promoter Dan Goossen has not heard from anyone with respect to a Clottey unification, so far.

Actually Williams came on this very site before the Phillips fight ever took place and said he not only wanted to fight Sergei, but he would go to Germany to fight him if the money was greener on that side of the ocean. Williams is the mandatory, the fight will happen.

The Punisher doens't duck anybody. I didn't know Dzindurak called him out but now that he did, it's his ass. Williams will take this fight as he has already stated that he would like to fight the german.

he's not even german *** face! Paul williams is a bitsh!!!!!!! He will not fight sergi only his fanboys believe the crap that comes out of his mouth. It's funny weekly there was two or three articles about williams and goosen opening their mouth calling fighters scared and duckers and now williams can't be found. They had a plan to chase the weakest title holder for a belt and it backfired on them! Verno got stripped now he is sergi's mandatory and sergi is ready and wants it. The ONLY reason this fight doesn't happen is if paul declines his mandatory position or watch him demand 90% of the purse only to have sergi say yeah right then paul and goosen will post an article a day how not even sergie wanted nothing to do with him lol
