Respect and Resentment for the Golden Boy

Oscar De La Hoya has said things in the past that he shouldn't have, everything from mentioning retirement two or three times without actually carrying it out, to the most popular instance promising Antonio Margarito a shot if he was to beat Miguel Cotto. "The Tijuana Tornado" accomplished his mission, but Oscar evidently didn't keep his word.

I could actually understand why some people dislike Oscar, especially among the Hispanic community that follows Boxing even though most of the people I've talked to in real life, both in and out of the United States have good things to say about him. One thing I notice is that many forget where Oscar came from, he was once a poor kid from the barrios of East Los Angeles living in the projects, who fought like his life depended on it. The same people chastise him for his humble personality and his current prosperity which really doesn't make sense to me. Are all Hispanics doomed to fit the stereotype?

Personally, coming virtually from nothing, I made something of myself and am in a great place in my life right now but I haven't forgotten where I come from, I know both sides of the coin so I'm torn here. My question is this and is directed to all those who dislike him, Is your dislike for Oscar exclusively based on decisions regarding his career, or is there a social or cultural seperation?

    Is it both?...Simply curious.

oscar fought the best of his time, at multiple weight classes
even taking a fight he said he never would against a younger lion (vargas)
    he is past his prime
stop treating him as if he is a contender
    he is an entertainer
    get over it

I dislike Oscar from a boxing fan perspective. He has fought like 5-6 times in the past 5-6 years and lost all but 1 (to Forbes lol). I have no interest in seeing him fight and I haven't for years. But because he owns half the talent out there he keeps getting fights. This clogs up other better fights that could be happening.
I find him boring outside of the ring as well. He doesn't have enough charisma to sell tickets or generate interest (this 24/7 for the pacman fight is really flat).

Overall I just wish he would retire and quit calling out fighters. He isn't what boxing needs right now. He's a nice guy who's had a good run but doesn't know when to hang it up. Golden Boy Promotions needs to start building up some of the younger guys because the sport needs them not a guy who fights once a year for half a decade and loses consistantly because he won't retire.

My question has nothing to do with his legacy.

the vargas fight was the turning point in oscars career, he had to win that fight not just for himself, but to get mexicans to shut up, he beat chavez, people got mad, so chavez lived vicariously through vargas, vargas got knocked out, now chavez jumped on margaritos ****, but the thing is, alot of mexicans believe chavez to be an icon, something he has rightfully earned, however chavez bitterness towards de la hoya resonated to other mexicans, especially after reading his book. Either way, i think Oscar owes nothing to mexico, im serious, dude was born here, he is just as american as i am. We were born in the same state, he owes it to himself to preserve the culture that made it possible for him to be here in the first place, but mexico itself? Oscar is an american boxing legend and an american gold medalist, not a mexican one, to me, that makes him one of us, and if people have issue with it, then **** em. Being a mexican american shouldnt be a walking cholo charichature, it should be about being who you are while not forgetting where your family came from. Hes also a ****ing mexican citizen, most mexicans couldnt give a **** about even naming 4 states in mexico, let alone become a citizen. but whatever. Im not even mexican, but still.

I used to be a big DLH fan cuz the guy made excitin fights and took on all challenges, except Winky. But now I hate him and I've lost a ****load of respect for him cuz of the whole Pac thing, and all the **** he's said leadin up to it. I still respect his past accomplishments, but the guy makes me ****in sick nowadays. I wish he'd just retire and stick to promotin.

He deciding to face Boxers like Steve Forbes and now Manny Pacquaio does have me buggin' a little. I feel you on that one, it's as if he has a disconnect with what Boxing fans really expect of him at this point.

i dont like oscar that much neither hes mexican when he wants to be and american when he wants to be. someone who changes his identity that much is someone who is just seeking praise from those who are around him, someone like that i could never admire or like, at least floyd is genuine and has a real sense of who he i and where his roots are.

apparently when floyd was young and upcoming his promoters wanted to market him in the same way as oscar, but floyd said no. they wanted to promote him in the same goodlooking, charismatic and talented bracket that had proven so popular for oscar and also his promoters. but floyd said no, he wasn't going to put on a fake mask or facade for anyone, now regardless of what you say that deserves respect, the minute i heard that i began to see floyd in a better light, in fact you could argue that he has more in common with hatton than oscar in that he acknowledge where he comes from.

im not sayig hatton and mayweather have the same personality - far from it but they both choose to reflect their roots. the english have never liked the uppity, stuck up their arse mentality and have appreciated aggression, hunger and competion but outside the ring there is a focus on gentle conduct and humility - hatton reflects all these traits. mayweather is the same with his talented, mouthy, trashy even but hes been able to back it up, like hatton he backs up his words and finds solace and security in his roots.

oscar is the opposite he changes his masks whenever he feels like it and based on whom he is around - one minute he wants the hungry, warrior mexican tag the next he wants to be seens as a legit, buisnessman. well imo he can't have it both ways he is eeither one or the other or he is more of one than the other but he seems content in trying to pull the wool over our eyes by making himself out to be both. as a result he seems fake, he doesn't seem to be either of them genuinely.

i guess what im saying is - I JUST DONT LIKE THAT MOFO!!!!
