So you'll understand my stance, I don't give Joe too much credit for beating an aged vet (he receives very little credit because hes past his prime as well, but nothing from me stating it was a great career defining win), the same as I'm not too hyped up about Tony facing a 37 year old Shane.

The same goes for Williams. I understand its a stay busy fight.

But he did what he was supposed to do.

    Thats not overly impressive.

Uh, he was supposed to. His last fight was against a MW unknown who he trashed in 1 round.

So, what is the big deal?

Well then it's not a big deal, he won. Time to move on to the next fight.

            Sign up boys.
Good point, but Williams has one of the biggest nuthugging followings on the board and Calzaghe has the most haters so this will go on deaf ears.

Ummm this is Verno Phillips we are talking about. Williams should have really "stopped" him at this point (39 years old).

That's why Paul only got like .000001 percent of the crowd to cheer for him after he was announced the winner.

You're right, he should of stopped him. And he did. While dealing with that cut. He didn't lose composure, stuck to his game plan, and broke his man down with a sustained body attack.
And the crowd wasn't there to see PWill. They were there to see *******....

Uhhh last time i checked Verno philips was NEVER stopped and just beat Corey Spinks and is one of the top junior middleweights. Roy Jones is shot to **** and isnt near the top of the light heavyweights.
He was stopped by Carl Sullivan in his fifth pro fight. Sulliven decisioned him in the rematch. When was this? Twenty years ago!

Phillips second best WW Rjj not second best LHW
Williams stopped Phillips Calzaghe did not stop Rjj unlike what Tarver and Johnson did
Rjj dropped Calzaghe Phillips didn't drop Williams
Calzaghe didn't have a 13" reach advantage on Jones, nor was he 12 years his junior.

Cmon man you're not impressed by a welterweight that went up in weight and dominated a guy who has never been stopped???????
                    1. He had been stopped
                    2. He moved up in weight against a guy who he was bigger than in every single way. It's somewhat like Cotto moving up in weight and fighting Judah.

Paul Williams isn't retiring on the heels of this fight and claiming to be a legend. That's the difference jackass.
Calzaghe - Jones was a career finishing money maker, I don't think anyone including the fighters see it as anything else. Essentially Williams dominated a journeyman in a stay-busy fight in which he held all of the advantages. He should have stopped him early. That he couldn't speaks volumes.

And again Williams defends with his face. This is a trait which is ridiculed in other fighters (Katsidis, Hatton, Arreola etc) but is somehow not worthy of mention in Williams. How many pure punchers has Williams fought?

The same goes for Williams. I understand its a stay busy fight.

But he did what he was supposed to do.

                    Thats not overly impressive.
What he was supposed to do is stop him early and not allow him into the fight. He failed to do so and won the majority of rounds on volume alone. He gets tagged so often though! It's painful really...

Phillips wasn't nearly as shot as RJJ, PWill's bodywork was impressive.

There is no way that guy should be fighting below SMW. I think he has an ability to weight drain and retain strengh rather than any sort of master boxing ability, he would look big in a ring with Kessler.
