Bear in mind that many of the posters swinging from his ballsack are the very same ones who deride Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton for "only beating old men" or for never fighting anyone of quality.

So here is a look at Verno Phillips:

    Age: 39 years
    Height: 5'7"
    Reach: 69"
    Record: 42(21)-10(1)-1
Notable wins: Lupe Aquano (vacant WBO Jr Middle title TKO7 1993), Cory Spinks (IBF Jr Middle title, SD12 2008)
    Notable losses: Carl Sullivan (LTKO5 1988, LUD8 1988 - first two losses back to back), Kassim Ouma (LUD10 2001, LUD12 2004), Ike Quartey (LUD10 2005)

Record in last six fights: 4(1)-2-0

Phillips is a decent fighter and a title holder. He isn't an elite fighter by any stretch and his age and size puts him at a huge disadvantage against 27 year old 6'2", 82" reach Williams.

No doubt some drooling imbecile will describe me as a "hater" for this post, but while I don't rate Williams terribly highly I think it's more important to provide some perspective into this matchup.

Williams has to be pretty damned impressive in this fight for a result to mean anything at all.
yeah, pwill gotta be impressive to make this fight mean something... other than that it's a stay busy fight and pick up an alphabet belt.

I'm aware of how boxing scoring works and Williams won maybe an extra round or two over Margarito. The problem is that there is this ungodly hype about Williams. After the Marg fight which I scored even (there were a lot of tied rounds) there was this outpouring of triumph and a bizarre notion that Williams had dominated the entire fight and won a lopsided victory. If Williams does as expected against Phillips then it will be unbearable.

A lot of people also think Phillips got a gift against Spinks. If you want to add that too. Phillips was outworked and beaten up by Kassim Ouma years ago. He's well past his best. This is a fight Williams should win. If he knocks Phillips out I'll be impressed. If he just beats him, it's what I expected, a solid win on an improving resume.

I agree. Except that I don't think Hatton's received alot of criticism for opposition. If he has, it's undeserved.

Haha what a ****in clown this guy is. You hate Williams and his hype, despite your disclaimers, so you start a thread about it?? Get a life loser go outside and get some fresh air.

You scored Margarito vs Williams a draw?? HAHAHA. There goes that little bit of respectability you had. I watched that fight with Russ Anber and people from his camp. EVERYBODY scored the first 6 rounds for Williams. He CLEARLY won the 12th. That's 7. You're telling me Margarito won rounds 7-11?? You're a crackhead shut the **** up.

By the way, Verno Phillips hasn't been on the canvas since 1988 he's a tough, experienced veteran that makes a lot of people look bad. You're already downplaying Paul's win before the fight even happened. Like I said, go outside and get some fresh air you attention whore.
