    Verno Phillips

The likelihood is that Williams is going to beat Verno Phillips tonight. Without wishing to denigrate Verno at all I would like to pre-empt the massive outpouring of bull**** I'm expecting following a Williams victory with a couple of home truths.

Bear in mind that many of the posters swinging from his ballsack are the very same ones who deride Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton for "only beating old men" or for never fighting anyone of quality.

So here is a look at Verno Phillips:

    Age: 39 years
    Height: 5'7"
    Reach: 69"
    Record: 42(21)-10(1)-1
Notable wins: Lupe Aquano (vacant WBO Jr Middle title TKO7 1993), Cory Spinks (IBF Jr Middle title, SD12 2008)
    Notable losses: Carl Sullivan (LTKO5 1988, LUD8 1988 - first two losses back to back), Kassim Ouma (LUD10 2001, LUD12 2004), Ike Quartey (LUD10 2005)

Record in last six fights: 4(1)-2-0

Phillips is a decent fighter and a title holder. He isn't an elite fighter by any stretch and his age and size puts him at a huge disadvantage against 27 year old 6'2", 82" reach Williams.

No doubt some drooling imbecile will describe me as a "hater" for this post, but while I don't rate Williams terribly highly I think it's more important to provide some perspective into this matchup.

Williams has to be pretty damned impressive in this fight for a result to mean anything at all.

If Williams wins regardless champion in 2 weight classes and moves up P4P ranking, add more fuel to Margarito rematch. Margarito can't duck Williams if he wins

Williams isn't towards the end of his career, claiming all these old man victories. He beat a prime Margarito and still has tons left in his boxing career. I think this is just a stay busy fight and claim another belt from another division. I wouldn't look to deep into this one.

I thought Spinks was robbed anyways against Verno.

        Verno shouldn't even be champ.

A victory over a hopelessly overmatched opponent should have no bearing on p4p rankings regardless of what weight that opponent is the day before the fight.

As I say unless Williams is utterly spectacular he doesn't get anything from this fight apart from a trinket that says "154".

He narrowly outpointed Margarito for one. Secondly are you suggesting that old man victories mean more if you are in your prime?

Hasnt Phillips actually had to vacate in order to fight WILLIAMS?
Either way its not a huge fight for Paul but he has tried to get the big ones so we have to respect he fighting the best guys he can.
I dont really like the guy and think he beatable and ur right after he beats Verno the fan boys will run wild!!!

He still started faster and this is boxing. Win more rounds, you win the fight. No I dont consider victories in your prime mean more but I also don't consider this a knock on Paul's resume. Its a fight to stay busy and grab a title to get him bigger fights. Honestly, who was he going to fight?

This fight isn't really for a world title, it's just for a WBO interim title. Phillips was stripped of his IBF title.

Williams will not be a two division world titleholder unless he fights and defeats a more difficult opponent, Sergei Dzinziruk, the WBO titleholder.
