    put it this way.

if you look at their careers.

joe started out 4 years earlier and became world champ 8 years earlier.

the fact that their resume is even close says a lot.

People go on about Tszyu still being a P4Per but so was Hopkins when JC beat him. I hope Kessler goes on to achieve great things to but JC's victory into perspective.

kostya was at the top of the list having reigned at 140 for years.

bernard was on the p4p list before but remember he dropped 2 back to back losses to taylor.

it took calzaghe 23 fights to win the wbo title.
it only took sven ottke 13 fights to win the real ibf title.
they both had the same number of title defenses.
          ottke is better.

            Heh.

Anyway, to get back to the topic, the resume's aren't really close at all. At the top end you could happily compare their best 5 and argue either way but Calzaghe's resume has a depth that Hatton's simply doesn't.

Hatton was 38-0 before Kostya and hadn't really fought anyone of real note by that point. Ben Tackie was virtually the biggest name on his resume until 3 years ago.

and 3 years ago what was joe's biggest wins?

eubank? very good fighter but way past prime. in fact eubank hadn't fought at 168 for 2 years until they had him fight for the vacant wbo belt against joe.

what was eubank's record in his last 4-5 fights going into the calzaghe fight?2-3?

sven ottke beat charles brewer for the ibf belt.

taking a champs belt is much more impressive than winning a vacant belt , especially the WBO. (the wbo at the time was not considered a major belt.)

considering they had joe fight chris (who hadn't fought at 168 for years) eubank for the belt shows why at the time the wbo was considered nothing more than a trinket used by european promoters.

Eubank, Mitchell, Brewer, Reid, Woodhall to name but 5. All World champions. It's not even comparable.

And don't ever try and legitimise Ottke's record. He should have lost at least 5 times and the "defeat" of Reid remains the single most corrupt officiating performance I have ever seen in any sport or even life.
