Antonio Margarito: Near Disaster and Fortunate Save

By Cliff Rold - The worst thing that can happen to a populist movement is to run smack into a realist paradigm. Populism is about what’s right, or at least what sounds right. Realism is about all of the things people do when they stop talking and think about the future. [details]

I agree. But I personally think that he won't get much criticism from journalists. I think most public persons have a good idea of what is going on... the fans are little bit more away. But that's why there are fans... and the way Margarito fans bashed other fans they now don't have to wonder to hear things like that.

I personally understand it. Every boxer is the same, they all want money. And that's not bad because it's their job. You also study etc. to get a good job. So why shouldn't boxers do it. They not train to loose every teeth they got, they not train to get beat around for a few bucks... I think the major problem is that most folks are simply too selfish and to unappreciative. They want blood, they want fight of the year candidates every fight and can't even appreciate a good boxing match anymore cause it's boring...

I'm happy for him, more or less he made a career out of desire. He's not that skilled but he got heart. Happy for him. Mosley is past his prime but still has enough to make it a very entertaining evening. Mosley is also someone who fought bigger guys and shouldn't be that overwhelmed from Margarito. If he gets tired in the second half, it could be a hell of a match up

It's been a nice read. I for one couldn't care less about Margarito being money hungry. He fights and gets hit hard for OUR entertainment. And Antonio Margarito had long been unrewarded till he proved himself against Cotto. He is qualified to have his payday. The problem is, there are fighters and promoters who demand more than they deserve. For me, it's not that Margarito looked like everyone else. Other fighters have been wrong to some extent. The money they get originally comes from the fans, but recently there are some fans who don't appreciate and acclaim the fights. Speaking of which, the article also reminded me of Dave Sholler's "Put Down Your Damn BlackBerry."

Its good to see someone work their way up thru the ranks, the hard way, and then be able to cash in. Fans should see the way Margs has lost and came back, and appreciate fighters who bring it every time. Nowadays we are too hard on fighters after they lose. It should not be about the loss but about the fact that they were willing to face the challenge. Margs has fought, or tried to fight, everyone at WW. He deserves to get paid.

If Margarito feels like he has been unrewarded for his hard work he should really look at his promoter. During the leadup to the Cotto fight all you heard was Arum basically saying Cotto would win. He basically threw Margarito under the bus for that fight and for his entire career. I dont think Margarito was being avoided because of him being a tough fighter, but he was a high risk low reward fighter because Arum didnt work hard enough to get him the fights nor the exposure of a champion who held his title for 7 years. So the blame lies at Arums feet.

Suprisingly enough, it's good for him that he held out on the fight. Seems he has smartened up and realizes Arum doesnt think much of his value and he has to do what he has to do in order to make the money he wants to make.

              Great ****ing article.

Marg's narrative is based on th "take on all comers", "mexican warrior", "blood n guts", and "I'll take short money to make fights" mantra. When Marg starts asking for more money he subverts his narrative and that makes him looks hypocritical and lose all credibility.

that's like the terminator coming back in time to kill john connors, but decides to take a vacation... it's not in the storyline and looks ******.

crold is correct that marg shouldn't have made the issue public. he shouldn't have gone missing and not answered his phone calls. because that gave mosley a chance to take shots at margarito... then marg had to respond by making a statement.... dumb dumb dumb... he should keep his negotiations private and he shouldn't be talking money split this n that... that's what his promoter is for.

To get respect You have to give respect

Great Article. Margarito deserves more of the money and more of the attention now. People don't realize how many fighters dodge Margarito in the past and now just because they see an opportunity they try to seize it. It doesn't work that way, to get respect you have to give respect. Margarito fought long and hard for his time. And now it's his time to crush everything in his new journey. That's what ignorant people who still live with their parents in these forums don't know. Life is a struggled and even when you are down and out, even when people can't you out- The strongest character of a person is shown when you rise from falling. When you fail, but you keep on trying and finally you feel like you have accomplished something great- being on the top. Anybody can hate all they want. But deep down inside those haters really wish they had a fighter as great as Antonio Margarito to cheer for. A man who exemplifies struggle, making noise, everyone turns their back on you, you get close to the top, you fall down, you gather the strength to get back up, you get to the top, everybody starts to hate because you know misery loves company, you take on the next challenge and once again the struggle begins.

if i was margs id do the same thing. coming off a huge upset victory against a guy who beat shane, being shafted for most of your career even while youre the champ, and being avoided by anyone not named paul williams, i think hes earned a lil pull for some money. plus a 50 50 spilt is ridiculous to fight shane, margs is the champ and he blasted cotto, who beat shane, i love shane, even trained in his gym in big bear and have more than respect and admiration for him, but hes not the champ and he didnt beat pwill, ya know!! so i think from a finalcial and respect point of view, this is the way it should have went down
