Joe Cortez...Ref of the Century

It's spelled "feces." Yeah, Cortez definitely smelled of what is clinically termed as "stool", what you describe as "feces", and what I call just plain old ****.Comment

Joe Cortez is a bad ref plain and simple but at least he's no Lawrence Cole who's been suspended more times than pacman jones from the nfl. At least Cortez makes an honest attempt at doing his job properly.
And there's nothing wrong with his catchphrase. Even Mills Lane had a catchphrase back in the dayComment

I feel you but the thing is 2 wrongs don't make a right here, maybe he was tougher than usual but Hatton didn't make it any better for himself by being KNOWN for fighting that way, Joe Cortez was just trying to be so fair that he was too strict in the process however it still doesn't make it okay for Hatton to HOLD then hit intentionally because that's illegal in Boxing, it's just not allowed and he's been getting away with it.Not one time did I hear Joe Cortez say: "Box out of it." We heard that alot tonight in the Hatton-Malignaggi fight and I didn't see anything illegal. What I heard in the Floyd fight was Jim Lampley busting a hernia about Joe Cortez inserting himself into the fight. I heard that all night, along with Cortez' constant "Break!" That's just what I heard. But, I also saw what I saw. I saw corruption in the form of a referee. I can take it with the promoters, the boxers, and even the judges (because we're so used to it), but not in the friggin ref!
thing is a lot of people feel a certain way about the ref, I always hear "the ref for Bute-Andrade is crazy" or "Meldrick Taylor should have won" and I AGREE however in this case Joe Cortez was doing the RIGHT thing he was just a little TOO hard on Ricky, he even warned Floyd for **** in the fight, he was just on high alert mode but if you really pay attention to the fight it didn't matter, it was only a matter of time before Mayweather caught him.
I'm not calling you a hater because I honestly don't feel you are, I can understand ya anger but maybe you ain't seeing the reasons behind Cortez's actions, Ricky Hatton has gotten past MANY opponent's doing that **** and Cortez knew about it, he was trying to nip that **** in the butt before it could unfold. in a nut shell he added a little too much salt to the food but it still came out good, it didn't completely ruin the food but I can notice the taste lingering. he did good considering, he may have been on high alert but it DID allow for the fight to be fought without illegal tactics..Comment

Just for the record, by the rules as applied by the governing body for the Bute/Andrade fight the ref and timekeeper got it 100% correct.
Bute goes down with 3 seconds left in the round, ref starts the count with time up but fighter down as he should, timekeeper doesn't ring the bell as he shouldn't.
Bute up in 7 actual seconds (not count of 7, 7 actual seconds.) By the rules from that moment on all he has to do is convince the ref he is capable of beating an 8 count.
Ref counts to 8, asks Bute to move towards him, which is the standard way to beat an 8 count, Bute does so the ref cleans his gloves, calls box on, Timekeeper rings fight over.Comment
