I think part of it is that American sports fans don't often have a reason to cheer for their country.
For example when the England football team play in the World Cup (football/soccer) the whole country suddenly becomes obsessed with having flags everywhere and cheering them on. In America, it seems like your competitions are mostly state vs state, and there aren't many sports where America plays a foreign country.
At least that's the impression I get?
Then again, the German fans aren't that enthusiastic, and their football team is very successful, so maybe my theory is wrong.
It's not really that incredible. Not for me, anyway, because Hatton fans are essentially football fans. And that's how football fans in England are- loud, boisterous, tribalistic and willing to go to all over the world to follow their team.
