Is it a case of British "Sense and Sensibility," "Pride and Prejudice" or just a wrong-headed piece of "Persuasion?"

The history of America's national sport has been re-written, thanks to a discovery made by a BBC South Today viewer.

Anyway, we'll let you keep it, because we're nice like that. I suppose it never took off because it's just a cheap version of cricket, or rounders (which girls play).

It will probably happen anyways. I don't see why you Americans care though why do you have to be so patriotic, if someone booed the English national anthem nobody would give a ****.

Why do you English have to be so dismissive and arrogant? See? I can play the same game you are playing.

Probably comes from the fact that Americans are taught from a young age that this country was founded on the revolution and freedom is fragile etc. etc. etc. etc. If you really wanted to know.

What is so wrong with being patriotic? If you jump back in history a bit, you will realize that many people in your own country sacrificed their lives to protect your flag, beliefs, and everything else you stand for. The anthem is a representation of the foundation that your country is build on and should be respected.

This should mean something to you. If you get passive and let it all slip away, it will slip away.

Good post. Your anthem is part of your identity I guess and it speaks about the past, present and future of where you come from.

I can see the point of people saying, 'hey, we're all humans...why should we get so wound up about anthems and patriotism when we're all of the same vein' And that is always a serious topic for discussion, how ridiculous the seperation of land and countries is, etc.

But I suppose that in sport it is man against man. Not man as a unity. Man against man makes it all the more exciting... so each man should bring the past and identity of where he came from. In that way sport has the biggest impact. A man from 'X' beats a man from 'Y'.

Nobody here cares for our national anthem. The only time we ever care is when we sing it before a game of football or rugby etc.
