The very simple fact in this equation is that Mosley is, by far, the biggest name Margarito would ever have fought hence he was being offered the biggest payday of his entire career. Of course Mosley was going to get more. He is twice the name Margarito could ever hope to be and that is how boxing works. The bigger name gets the bigger money.
Don't forget something here though. Margarito called Mosley out, not the other way around. Mosley accepted and then went on to offer Margarito the biggest pay he has ever, and probably will ever, receive in his fighting career. Why would you ever turn that down? Highest payday ever, against the biggest name fighter ever and it was a fight that you had been calling for? It is very strange no matter which way you try to spin it.
If Margarito wants these big paydays against these big names one thing he has to understand is that he himself is not the big name, and as such, will never get the higher % of the purse. It never works that way. Mosley has been a boxing superstar for a long, long time whereas Margarito has only just become a better known fighter. There is no way he would ever get a bigger purse than the big names he wants to fight. To get the big paydays he has to fight these guys, but he also has to except the smaller %. There is no other way around it. It is that simple.
Nonetheless, it still remains that he was just offered a career high payday from someone he called out, who is a boxing legend. Why would he turn that down? You simply cannot defend this move as it is very, very odd. To get a big name you have to beat the big names. He has beaten one semi-big name in Cotto. If he had beaten Mosley he would be on the way to getting the big name he wants and the bigger pays.
Edit: I have just now found out that Mosley wasn't even getting the larger %! Now that really is something. The biggest name, in the biggest fight, with the highest pay, which was a 50/50 split from someone he called out and he turns around and backs out of it and then uses money as an excuse? Go figure that one out! Mosley was getting the same amount! How can he possibly use that as an excuse? No one is getting more than he is and it's the biggest pay he's ever been offered!

He will not get a better offer from anyone else.
