Do we need to give more respect to boxers in general?

The people that step in that ring and take a beating sometimes. Some of us, even including me end up calling these people bums. But if we didn't have these fighters fighting aswell, we wouldn't have a sport called boxing.

Sue me, I'm guilty of it too.

My money for live events and PPVs shows enough respect.

The guys steppin' into the ring are the ones risking their health and life for our pleasure. If anyone is the 'bum', it's one and all of us watching it and enjoying it.

How could I not respect a professional fighter?

I think it's the worst when fans call Calzaghe or Floyd frauds. Isn't that kind of ignorant? I guess it would be different if you were in there shoes and you have accomplished as much as those two have done in the sport.

In short, yes. I don't hate any boxer. What has he done to me? Anyone whom does hate a boxer, whom they've never met, whom hasn't said anything particularly wrong against them or anything closely related to them, has questionable motives.

The only person you are answerable to is yourself.
They choose their path, they earn my respect for taking that choice and doing what i presume most of them aspire to, but its exactly that a choice.
I have respect more for the guys who have very bad records, its easy to go fight when your winning all the time.
That said not all boxers fight for pride or aclaim I don't have any less respect for someone who fights purely for money.

                Nice thread.

As fans of boxing we should all give more respect to all fighters.

Especially those who has accomplished alot in the sport like Mayweather, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Jones, etc.

I kind of disagree, if anything makes the sport what it is its the unsung heroes the people who all to often get called bums and journey men.
The ones who give it all and come up short, the ones you see sat on the steps of the venue at the end of the night wondering how they are going to get home, if they will get to fight again.
