"I was only 70% against Hopkins because I knew I'd beat him, my dad made me put in the extra 2 weeks of hard work."
Joe Calzaghe: I was only 70% against Hopkins

Calzaghe revealed: “For the last two years I had fallen out of love with boxing. It was only my dad kicking me up the a*** very hard and very often that got me going again.
“I haven’t been motivated for some fights. Dad has had to kick me more and more every time I fight. The result was my performance against Jones at Madison Square Garden.
“It feels great people are calling me the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, especially at this stage of my career after all the hardship.
“To be given the respect and credit aged 36 is just fantastic.”
Calzaghe has trained like a professional boxer since he was 13, missing out on the normal things kids do to dedicate himself to get to the top.
He added: “My dad always felt I would be world champion. I always had this unbelievable drive to be a world champion, training like a pro since I was 13.
“I sacrificed a lot. That is what I call dedication. Talent alone doesn’t make a great fighter. It needs everything to become a champion for so long.
“I used to fight all the time, but now it is just twice a year. I used to train all the time, but now I have two months off.
“I beat Hopkins even though I was at only 70 per cent of my best but for Jones I was 100 per cent.
“For the Hopkins fight I didn’t train the way I should. For Jones it was different because my dad kicked me up the a***.
“I trained so hard for the last 12 weeks, but he motivated me so much for this fight and made sure I was in great shape.
He added: “I believe I am at the top now and there is a good chance I will call it a day.”Comment

err...he is talking about hopkins, and it aint an excuse because at the end of the day he beat hopkins.the reality of their fight is that it was ugly.neither fighter looked particularly good that night. If hopkins is as great as you say he is,and joe is as **** as you say he is,then why did hopkins struggle so badly against him? even if you deludedly believe he actually won,it sure didnt look like the pavlik fightComment
