    An excellent article.

One small point of order on the whole Tocker Pudwill debacle which seems to have been forgotten. That was a very short notice fight (48 hours I think) when Thomas Tate dropped out. I'm not saying Tate would have hung with Calzaghe but it would have been better than his late replacement. It's very rare for a fight to be pulled at that sort of notice, particularly in the UK.

That was a good read i enjoyed that article....i would say the arguement about him not facing a younger jones or hopkins is interesting in that he called them both out in their younger days....him and hopkins almost agreed to the fight before it was hopkins himself at the 11th hour asking for double the purse he would recieve...whether or not he would've beaten a younger hopkins or jones remains the topic or many discussions but you can't fault him for not fighting them young when he did call them both out. I don't think he would've had beaten a younger roy jones to be honest, joe's punch out put or work rate would've made the fight close but jones back in the day had cat like reflexes, still think it would've gone to point but a younger RJJ would've probably been too much for anyone, lncluding joe....all that aside he you can't fault joe for anything because he never shyed away from anyone and beat who was put in front of him..being at SMW bar to fights, there isnt a big enough SMW in joe's era that he really could've gone up against that would've further cemented his legacy...anyone else he coulda gone up against would've been viewed as jus another euro fighter, hence why he had to destroy an up and coming american to get the recognition he deserved...for joe to be viewed as greater he would've probably had to have been born 5 years earlier and gone up against the plethra of SMW during the fierce era which included collins and benn...but in my opinion he really could've have done much differently to further cement his legacy...it only seems to be americans that question it greatly but for the life of me i couldn't think of anyone else he could've beat that he didn't call out to bury any doubts..

Just wanted to say brilliant article Cliiff. One of the best I've read in a long time, especially when there's so much unbalanced rubbish flying around these days on the net in particular.

Excellent article, I wish we could see more of this type of thinking on the forum and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Calzaghe is 5'11". Hopkins was obviously taller.

yes he was; minor oversight that has been corrected. he beat Malinga and lost to beyer.
