  • Measured Against All Time - Joe Calzaghe

By Cliff Rold - It shouldn’t matter, but it did. Logic said Joe Calzaghe, while only three years younger, had too much in the tank to be troubled much by a man who still looks like Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KO) but doesn’t fight much like him anymore. Boxing though is a sport where passions and memories run deep and seeing is believing. Beating big names is often as important as beating better challenges without them. The nature of Calzaghe’s win over Jones, sans logic, is forcing tons of conversation about his place in history which really made just as much sense a week ago. [details]

Age is irrelevant to being shot or not..look at Vargas.

boxrec has him at 5'11 1/2 but a lot of other places have listed him at 6 and 6'1. Calzaghe and Kessler stood nose to nose during their pressers and Kessler is 6'1.

          Good read.

I thought Alvarez' title was not on the line in the second Lopez fight.

Hopkins is 6'1", as far as I know, and 'Nard seems taller than Joe?

            Good article, btw.

Well, he did say 'While it shouldn't matter'. I'm quite positive that he actually meant "Even though Calzaghe is only three years younger, everything still points to him still beating Jones because he is not shot like Jones is", ya know?

Anyway, I thought it was a great article Cliff. Good stuff. I also agree completely. The simple fact is that it is freakishly rare for anyone, no matter how bad some of the competition is, to achieve what Calzaghe achieved. Very, very rare. Like it or not, he also fought many good fighters and many world champions, both current, former and future. He's a stunning boxer that should most definitely be rated as one of the best of the modern era fighters ever.

That was a really good, balanced article but I have one minor complaint. I'm pretty sure that Richie Woodhall was WBC champ (albeit briefly) so should have been added to the list of champions defeated.
