Who would you rather be, Hopkins or Jones? I rather be Hopkins.
When I say that I'm looking at it as who I rather would be if I were a professional boxer and planned on (or had to fight, some don't make as much $ as others to retire early) fighting for 15-20 years.
No doubt, Jones will go down as the greater fighter with respect to accomplishements, resume, etc,. 4-division champion, wins over Toney, Hopkins, winning a Heavyweight title etc,. There is no argument there.
It is also easy to say that RJJ is athetically far superior to Jones. He could get away with alot more then Hopkins in the ring. Hopkins had to be alot more disciplined to win fights BUT.
When you look at their careers OVERALL from 1990 to 2008, it's easy to see who the better fighter is when you compare their fights against the same opponents. They both have 5 losses yet only one of them never got knocked out or dominated in any fight.
Against each other: They had a competitive fight and Hopkins was never out of it. Although Roy clearly beat him.
Their fights against Trinidad: Hopkins dominated and TKo'd a unbeaten, active Trinidad at 160. Roy was losing a buncha rounds to Trinidad before he took over with the two knockdowns late in the fight. A retired, inactive, older Trinidad and at 170.
Their fight against Glen Johnson: B-Hop Tko'd Johnson and is the only man to do so. Roy Jones got dominated and Ko'd by the Road warrior.
Their fights against Tarver: Hopkins went in and dominated completely. Roy Jones struggled in each and every fight against Tarver.
Their fights against Calzaghe: Hopkins knocked Joe down in the 1st round and still was competitive after that, making it hard to score. No scratch/cut on him. Roy Jones was out of it after the first round.
One is almost 44 years of age right now, the other is almost 40. Most would pick Hopkins to win if they fought again. You can explain/excuse everyone of those fights mentioned, on behalf of Roy but all I'm saying is LONGEVITY and Ring Savy should also be taken into account when comparing two great fighters.
I'd rather have B-Hop's ring smarts, defense, discipline and longevity then Roy's superior atheticism, skills and speed. It doesn't matter how great you are if your greatness fades quicker then the other fighter
