Honestly, though, he still would not have beaten Joe Calzaghe last weekend.

True...but up to an extent. Joe actually jabs and ducks and slips punches on bended knees as most old school boxers do. He definitely hides his straight left behind a jab. He's uses combinations a lot and doesn't try to end the fight with one punch like RJJ used to.

I think his explanation pretty much backs up what he claimed. Joe is unorthodox but he does utilize the fundamentals. He jabs a lot to set up his left, he hits in combos, he's not a stationary target....just because he showboats, he's still using most of the fundamentals.

RJJ and Naseem Hamed - without the fundamentals, they're beatable without the super human reflex and speed they once had.

Yep, 100% true. He relied so much on his reflexes it became his life. Cant blame him. Like Hopkins said at old age you got to change your approach and use experience. When your legs go, you got to learn better defense and keep guys off with the jab. Now with Mayweather, he already has all that now with great defense, he can still win big at 35. But Jones' downfall was moving down from HW to LHW. Guy was crazy doing it SO soon.
