  • Prime Roy Jones Jr did not use the fundamentals of boxing

He didn't have to. His reflex and speed were phenominal.

But once he got slower, he was beatable. His record in the last 5 fights shows that.

No jabs, rarely keeps his gloves up. He's still relying on his reflex to avoid punches. He rarely ducks punches. He flinches away. That's fine...but he can't always do that especially when he's slower nowadays. His hands are still too low. He's relying on his quickness to connect and doesn't bother trying to hide his right cross with jabs.

Honestly, though, he still would not have beaten Joe Calzaghe last weekend.

Yeah, he was such an athletic specimen that he could get away with not using the fundamentals. He was so damn fast and unorthodox that he threw a lot of guys off their game. Then when age started catching up with him, he got KTFO.

I've been saying that for a very long time. RJJ should have been smart enough to know his athletic ability was always gonna be there...He should have developed a better defense, dirty moves ****!! and pop the jab some more. All in all, he has accomplished GREAT things and keep in mind...as GREAT as SRL was, he was shot at 34! So its NOT really that big of a deal

Roy's style is not suited fighting at a older age because of is lack of fundamentals. Should have retired after the 1st Tarver fight. He dropped back to 175 and showed a lot of heart in that fight considering he was drained and ****** it up. That would have been a great way to go out.

I think if he had beat Tarver in their rematch he wouldve walked away from boxing... but that knock out changed everything

his spded loss is what really hurts him because he used to hit on a counter, and get out. now he gets hit as he's trying to counter, and can't go out as well.

Floyd has the skill to win at old age. He may have been a GREAT athlete but unlike RJJ, he had the skills to go with it.

to me thats what made Roy Jones special. he didn't box out of a textbook, he wrote his own like Larry Merchant said.
