Who would Calzaghe need to beat to be recognized as a great fighter?

He would need to beat God decisively. Even then, you could make a case that God is past his prime and his skills have deteriorated significatly over the past million years.Comment

Those *******s doing the 24/7 were just saying that about her to degrade Joe Calzaghe.Comment

Joe is a great fighter, has been for a long time. IMO a HOFer. ATG? That's debatable. He just doesn't have the stellar names on his record that unanimous ATGs have. Like Glen Johnson said himself, "It's hard to get Joe in the ring." If he had been taking on all-comers all these years he's been reigning, there'd be no debate. Fighting once or twice a year against selected opponents casts a shadow of doubt on a claim of ATGness.Comment

At the time he was champ? Yes. Let's see he could have fought Roy and B-Hop a decade ago, Tarver, Taylor, Winky, Andrade, Mundine, Green, Ottke, etc., etc. All these possible fights would've added to his case (assuming he wins).Comment

I thought the Hopkins fight was it, i was never more amazed at how a fighter can be compltely takin out of his game like Hopkins was, I was personally gassed into thinkin Hopkins was this educated fighter that would make Joe look ******. But instead, Hopkins just got completely worked over, at one point Nard tried to flurry pitty pat toward the end of the fight WHEN HE NEVER DOES THAT. Thats when I knew it was official, he was desperate.
But Hopkins and Roy fans wont be satisfied until Calzaghe loses lol...Comment

Jones was fighting at light-heavyweight when Joe was at super-middle. Jones refused to fight in the UK. Hopkins was fighting at middleweight and agreed to fight Calzaghe before doubling his demands the next day. Tarver fought at a different weight and wasn't on the radar until the fights with Jones. Winky was fighting at light-middleweight until 2005 and then middleweight until last summer. Ottke point blank refused to fight Joe anywhere other than Germany. The other names would not have been acknowledged as good wins.Comment

A win over Dawson and a rematch with Hopkins would make it indisputable, but if he were to retire now he'd get the recognition in a few years anyway. I find his career just saddening though. He should have been a superstar on the world scene years ago. He has been that good for a long time. Yet, the Warren safety first matchmaking prevented that from ever happening. I'll always think what could have been more than what actually was with Calzaghe.Comment
